Woot is having an Earth Day Sale on older Fire TVs, Echos, Kindles, and more

Woot! is currently running an Earth Day Sale on Amazon devices. Most devices are used or refurbished, but they should still work for years to come. The only Fire TV deal on the list is a used 2nd-gen Fire TV for $18.99. While it’s still a very capable device, I wouldn’t rely on it as your main Fire TV but it would for a nice emulation gaming device, thanks to its micro SD card slot and full-sized USB port. Also available is a used 1st-gen Echo Show 5 for $29.99. The only difference between it and the latest Echo Show 5 is the newer one has a 2MP camera, instead of the 1MP camera on the older one. Click here for the full list of devices on sale.

Why wouldn’t you rely on the 2nd gen fire tv box as you main fire tv?

So, on impulse I ordered the Fire Box 2. What else can I do with it? Is there a tutorial you can point to for the emulation project you mentioned?

The 2nd Gen. FireTV box can be ROOTED, which will allow some customization over stock, but you are still only on Android 5.1 as the underlying operating system; so some app compatibility my come in to play with newer apps targeting Android 9 and/or above.

Elias posted a Root guide a couple years ago for the FireTV box(2). Which probably needs updating.

      Some Root info posted here:

No need to root to run emulators, though. Sideload RetroArch direct from the RetroArch website. Use the Downloader app to do so.

No need to sideload RetroArch, it’s available directly from the Amazon Appstore since last year. Current version same as developer website.
ROMS need to be sideloaded, of course.
