WarnerMedia, along with HBO, is merging with Discovery

As if the rumored purchase of MGM by Amazon wasn’t a big enough shift in the media industry, AT&T has announced that it will be spinning off its media business WarnerMedia, which includes HBO, into a new company that will merge with Discovery. Once regulators sign off on the merger, the new unnamed company will be in control of media properties such as HBO, CNN, TBS, TNT, Discovery Channel, Food Network, TLC, HGTV, and many more. It will be the second-largest media company in terms of revenue, second only to Disney.

Does this mean if we have Discovery app we will be able to get HBO with it? That would be awesome!

LOL. That was my first thought. After that 6 month lockout at launch over whether you could subscribe to HBO Max via Prime Video Channels, we might have that option in the future.

Where are the prime video channels, not sure what you mean but seems like I’ve heard this before or seen a video on it.

Prime Video Channels show up in the Prime Video app or the Fire TV UI home page if you subscribe to a streaming service via Prime Video Channels, like the Discovery+ streaming service. The content is integrated into the Prime Video app or Fire TV UI and you don’t need to have a separate app installed.

Maybe the sale will result in a reduction in my cellular bill

Doubt it. What I expect in the future is that our AT&T unlimited data plans will remain the same price and then we will get an announcement that HBO Max is no longer part of our unlimited wireless data plan. That is the AT&T way….

Hmmm, I don’t see all the media being in one subscription but maybe there will be a bundle deal like with Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN.

I have both and struggle to see one service that houses such diverse content. Guess it depends on how they intend to price it out. Do you keep one $14.99 a month price and include both and hope to really drive up subscriptions or do you keep them separate (Discovery+ at $6.99 and HBO Max at $14.99) and offer a discounted bundle price?

I came across an article yesterday that the CBS (Network) show “EVIL” (which I think is quite good) is being moved behind the paywall to Paramount +
    (just because it’s a hit)
The point being, we all know where this is heading: Every network is using their free OTA broadcasts as a “Testing Ground” if a show flops: cancelled. If a show is mediocre: keep it free. If a show is a hit: behind the paywall. All of these mergers and consolidations will ensure “good”
programing will be properly sorted to the advantage of the network ownership. So get ready to breakout your wallets and “reconnect the cord” albeit in the new 21st Century streaming way!

    • oasis_001 says:

EVIL was not a hit on the CBS linear broadcast channel. It only performed well in day after on-demand streaming and then received a big lift when it became available on Netflix. This show would likely have been canceled if it remained on CBS linear broadcast. The Paramount+ streaming option gives it an opportunity to continue that it would not have received on CBS. You have to be a big hit with broad appeal or be a cheaper to produce reality/competition show to get a limited slot on broadcast networks now. At least there are streaming options for other content that would have never gotten on a broadcast network or would have been quickly cancelled.

Got it…your not a fan of the show, everything is subjective. I wasn’t promoting it only paraphrasing an article from a Major outlet detailing that due to the show’s popularity it was moving to a premium service
(I mean why would you do that otherwise?)
PLUS a 91% Tomatometer as well 4-5 stars on every other Major Critics list would say otherwise so I’m not sure what you’re going on about. Have a nice night but I’m done with this convo.

        • oasis_001 says:

You GOT IT wrong. I am a big fan of the show EVIL. It is popular with its avid viewers and with the Rotten Tomato score you posted above. But, it was not a huge success in the linear ratings on CBS. It was popular with a core fanbase on-demand and when it became available on Netflix. That is why it is moving to Paramount+. There is streaming success and there is linear broadcast ratings success. It has been a streaming success. I don’t think it is some sinister plot to move all popular shows from CBS to behind a paywall. The shows will land where they have the most chance of succeeding. It would make no business sense for CBS to move it off of the broadcast side if that is where it pulled in the most viewers and most revenue. I am glad that Paramount+ is available as an outlet for it to continue. It likely would not have made it past a second season on CBS.

Yikes…I really don’t care. Please enough… if it makes you feel better you WIN! This is a nonfactual pointless discussion.

I get HBO Max free thru Spectrum since we subscibe to the cable channel. would this changr anything or not? I hope not. getting it free qirohut 14.99 a monh is noice

    • oasis_001 says:

This merger likely won’t finalize until mid-2022. AT&T will own 70% of this new company, so there is a chance that some of this packaging that includes an HBO Max subscription, like an AT&T unlimited data plan, may stay in place for awhile. But, let’s be honest. Most of us think we are getting HBO Max for ‘free’, but some of that cost is baked into our pricing for cable or wireless plans.

      • ben says:

oh i know its bulked in but still cheaper than paying an extra 14.99 a month

        • oasis_001 says:

True. That $14.99 a month stanalone price is pretty steep. Throw in Discovery+ commercial-free at $6.99 and you are at $21 a month for both. That pricing for both will need to be less if they intend to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney+.

Fair enough. It is a good show and I am glad it has a chance to continue on a streaming platform that will likely give it a chance to run for a few more seasons. Have a great evening.

” Once regulators sign off on the merger,”

I mean do regulators actually do anything?
shouldn’t it be IF not once ?
