Toshiba’s new flagship Fire TV Smart TVs, the M550 Series, technically first became available about a month ago through Best Buy but now it’s also available through Amazon and, so, is getting an official reveal. Along with the 55-inch size (model 55M550KU) that has already been available for purchase, we now know that there will also be 65-inch (model 65M550KU) and 75-inch (model 75M550KU) sizes coming soon. We also now know all the various techinical specifications like CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage details. These are the first Toshiba TVs with hands free-voice control built in and the first Fire TV Smart TVs from any manufacturer with full-array local diming.
The new Toshiba M550 series TVs certainly deserve to be called Toshiba’s flagship Fire TV Smart TVs but they’re also very strong contenders for the best Fire TV Smart TVs you can buy. That’s because they feature a full-array local dimming backlight, which no other Fire TV Smart TV has ever had. This feature allows the TV to change the brightness of its LED backlight in various zones, 48 zones to be exact, in order to selectively darken parts of the image while keeping other parts bright. This is far superior to direct LED backlights, featured on all other Fire TV Smart TV models, which must darken or brighten the entire image at once.
We already knew these 4K TVs support Dolby Vision but we now know that they also support HDR10+, a feature becoming rarer and rarer as Dolby Vision seems to be the focus of most HDR-capable premium TVs. Of course, they also support regular HDR10 and HLG. They use the same MediaTek T31 quad-core CPU running at 1.5GHz and the same Mali-G52 MP1 GPU found in nearly all of the best Fire TV Smart TVs. That SoC is paired with 2GB of RAM and, thankfully, 16GB of internal storage. Connectivity is also the same as most with 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi, 10/100 Ethernet, and Bluetooth 5.0. They support Miracast screen mirroring and Apple AirPlay 2 support.
As mentioned, these are hands-free TVs with an array of 4 microphones located at the bottom-center of the TV, which can be muted with a physical switch. Muting the mics still allows you to press and use the mic on the remote. This is only the 3rd Fire TV Smart TV model to feature hands-free mics, after Grundig debuted it in Germany in 2019 and Amazon included it in its Omni Series Fire TV Smart TVs earlier this year. Toshiba’s TVs come with 4 HDMI 2.1 ports, of which one supports eARC, with auto low latency mode for gaming. There is support for composite analog video, through an included breakout cable, as well as a headphone jack, optical audio out, and RF coaxial for the built-in over-the-air TV tuner.
Toshiba’s new M550 Fire TV Smart TVs will be priced $799.99 for the 55-inch, $999.99 for the 65-inch, and $1,199.99 for the 75-inch. That said, the 65-inch is currently being sold for $649.99 at both Amazon and Best Buy, so list prices really are meaningless when it comes to Fire TV Smart TVs. The 65-inch and 75-inch models are not yet available for purchase but are said to become available by the end of the year.
Oh nice! I was looking at the 65″ TVs on Black Friday but didn’t pull the trigger. That will be a good replacement for the projector and 80″ screen in my family room.
Now know what will be replacing my 73″ DLP set (love the heck outta this thing!) when it goes, IF it goes! I can buy an awful lot of new lamps for what a new set will cost. But my son has the 65 C350 and it is a pretty darn nice set, but the 550 is the way to go if one can swing the added cost.
Well, ordered the M550 75″ last night! Will be delivered in a few days. Couldn’t pass up the $750 sale price! Excited! Now, what to do with the 73″ DLP set the M550 is replacing…
Best Buy rocks! Got a refund of $50 for the M550 75″, bringing the end price to $699!!! INCREDIBLE!!! Fantastic set, I couldn’t be happier with it! Thanks for the heads up on this set Elias! FYI…Best Buy still has these sets on a major sale, 699 75″; 499 65″; 399 55″!!! Crazy insane in these times of high inflation! 50% off list for a 75″, 4K, local dimming, fireTV, television…WOW!!!
