True to their word, Amazon has cut prices on specific grocery staples at Whole Foods, which they now officially own as of this morning. Bloomberg logged prices last week and checked again today to find that organic Fuji apples have received the largest price cut, dropping 43% from $3.49 to $1.99 per pound. Other heavily discounted items include bananas, fish, beef, and avocados.

Amazon has also set up a “Farm Fresh” Amazon Echo display at several Whole Foods locations where they’re selling the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot at discounted prices of $99.99 and $44.99 respectively. There’s no need to hunt down one of these displays, however, because the same sale prices are currently available on Amazon’s site.

Amazon to lower Whole Foods prices when their acquisition becomes final this Monday

Amazon’s acquisition of grocery chain Whole Foods closes this Monday and the retailer has announced they’ll immediately be lowering the prices on a selection of best-selling grocery staples across its stores. Price drops will start with bananas, apples, avocados, kale, lettuce, almond butter, eggs, salmon, tilapia, ground beef, rotisserie chicken, butter, and spread to other products in time. Once integration is complete with Whole Foods’ cash registers, Prime member will be able to enjoy additional special savings and in-store benefits. Whole Foods’ “365” private label products will eventually be available through Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry, and Prime Now. Lastly, Amazon will be adding Amazon Lockers to select Whole Foods stores where customers can have products shipped or send returns back to Amazon during a trip to the store.

Amazon to buy Whole Foods for $13.7 billion

Amazon has announced that it has agreed to acquire Whole Foods Market, the upscale grocery chain best known for its organic foods. Amazon has experimented with physical bookstores, a cashier-less convenience store, and grocery pickup locations, but this is by far their biggest push into offline retail. This acquisition gives Amazon over 460 stores in the United States, Canada and Britain. It should be interesting to see how Amazon incorporates their technological prowess into those stores.
