Vudu app for Fire TV and Firestick is now available to install from the Amazon Appstore

Earlier this week, Vudu revealed that they were finally releasing an app for Fire TV devices and now Vudu for Fire TV has arrived in the Amazon Appstore. The app is compatible with every Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Edition model. It’s a very rudimentary app but it gets the job done of giving you up to 4K playback of your Vudu library. There is a Movies section and a TV section where you can browse content in the Vudu store. If you log into the app you’ll be able to view your purchased content, as well as view your watchlist, wishlist, and pre-orders. The app also has a Kids Mode where you can select an age between 2 and 12 and only content appropriate for that age or under will be accessible. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase content directly from the Fire TV app, likely because Vudu doesn’t want to give Amazon a cut of the in-app purchase. You’ll need to purchase content through a phone or computer on Vudu.com first before it can be played in the Vudu app for Fire TV. There also doesn’t seem to be any way to watch any of the free ad-supported content that Vudu offers.

Fire TV devices are finally getting an official Vudu app

An official Vudu app is finally coming to the Amazon Fire TV appstore, according to Chris Welch from The Verge. Vudu, one of the largest digital video marketplaces with over 150,000 movies and TV shows, has never been officially available on Fire TV devices because it was owned by Walmart, one of Amazon’s largest retail rivals. Walmart sold Vudu to Fandango last year, which removed that barrier for a Fire TV app. Much of Vudu’s library has since been available on Fire TV devices through the FandangoNOW app for Fire TV, but now the entire library will soon be available. The Vudu app for Fire TV is expected to be available in the coming days.

Vudu possibly reveals plans for upcoming Amazon Fire TV app

Vudu might have let slip that an app for Amazon Fire TV devices is in the works. A post in Vudu’s forum indicates that Vudu briefly listed the Fire TV as one of their supported devices on their main about page. The page has since been updated to no longer include the Fire TV. Notably, a screenshot of the about page showing the Fire TV listed, that the forum poster uploaded, has also been taken down by Vudu. Read more ›
