The 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick and the Fire TV Stick Lite have been rooted. XDA forum user k4y0z has posted instructions for how to root either device, which currently requires the Firestick be on Fire OS version 7.2.7.3 or older. Anyone with a rooted Fire OS 5 device, including the 1st and 2nd-gen Fire TV boxes and the 1st and 2nd-gen Fire TV Sticks, can now update to software version 5.2.7.3. Rbox is still at it after all these years and has just uploaded the newest images to flash. Those of you with rooted Fire TVs can now update your devices to software version 5.2.6.9, thanks to new pre-rooted ROMs created by Rbox. ROMs are available for the Fire TV 1, Fire TV 2, and now also for the Fire TV Stick 2, which was recently rooted for the first time. For those of you with rooted 2nd-generation Fire TVs, Rbox has just released a pre-rooted ROM of the latest 5.2.6.8 software update. This will allow you to update your rooted device without losing root access. You can download the image from the usual XDA forum thread and install it through TWRP by following this guide. I have not had a chance to capture the update images for the Fire TV 1 or Fire TV Stick 1 yet, which is why pre-rooted ROMs for those devices have not been created. I’ll do that soon and shoot them over to Rbox and, hopefully, he will have time to make those pre-rooted images as well. An issue has popped up that is causing the Alexa system app on rooted 2nd-gen Fire TVs that have the Xposed Framework installed to repeatedly crash and restart in a never-ending cycle. The issue seems to only affect devices running the 5.2.6.7 pre-rooted ROM that have also installed Xposed. The result is a loss of all Alexa voice remote functionality and a hit to performance. A new software update has rolled out to the 2nd-gen Amazon Fire TV and the 1st-gen Fire TV Edition televisions by Element and Westinghouse. The new update uses the same 5.2.6.7 version number as the previous software update, but it increases the build number to 623530020. Strangely, the 1st-gen Fire TV and both Fire TV Sticks, which are the other models running Fire OS 5, have not received this new update. Read more ›
