Nvidia Shield TV gains exclusive access to 4K HDR cloud gaming at 120 FPS through GeForce Now

Nvidia has announced a new high-end tier for its GeForce Now cloud gaming service. The “RTX 3080” plan, as it’s being called, promises a dedicated gaming rig in the cloud with an RTX 3080 graphics card that delivers up to 1440p resolution and 120 fps on Mac and PCs. However, exclusively on Shield TV and Shield TV Pro devices, the resolution can go up to 4K with HDR. Nvidia says they do plan to eventually bring 4K cloud gaming to other devices, such as PCs with GeForce graphics cards and other Android TV devices. The new RTX 3080 tier isn’t cheap at $99 per 6 months, plus you’re still buying the games individually. The new service is expected to launch in the US next month and in Europe in December. Existing Founders and Priority subscribers can preorder now.

Nvidia Shield TV won’t be updated to Android 10 but Tivo Stream 4K might

Nvidia has confirmed on its product forum that the Shield TV will not be updating to Android 10, as spotted by @mrjuzmafia. An employee post states that “SHIELD development is still full steam ahead” and that “there is still a lot of development going into SHIELD” but Nvidia has decided to skip updating to Android 10 because “the effort was large and there was essential no impact to end users.” The Tivo Stream 4K, on the other hand, appears to be set to receive an Android 10 update, according to the Google Play Console, which @AndroidTV_Rumor spotted. A new Nintendo Switch game console was announced this morning that swaps the 6.2-inch LCD screen on the existing model for a 7-inch OLED screen, among other upgrades. If you’re unaware, Nintendo Switch models are closely tied to Nividia Shield TV models because they are the two primary consumer devices that use Nvidia Tegra X1 processors. Customers upset with Nvidia Shield TV’s new Google TV interface with Ads

The Nvidia Shield TV has received an update that changes its classic Android TV interface to the new Google TV interface with ads. The Shield TV’s new interface isn’t the full-fledged Google TV interface found on the 2020 Chromecast, but, rather, it’s the partial Google TV interface with only some aspects of Google’s revamped interface for Android TV devices. One of the few aspects the new interface carries over from the Chromecast to the Shield TV are large ads at the top of the home screen which have upset Shield TV owners enough to flood the Google Play Store with negative reviews that have plummeted the Android TV Home app down to a 1-star rating. Apple TV app is now available on most Android TV devices

Nvidia has announced that the Apple TV app is now available on Shield TV devices. Taking a look through my assortment of Android TV devices shows that it’s available on all of them, including the Tivo Stream 4K, Walmart Onn UHD Streaming Device, and Mi Box, so, it seems like the app is now widely available on most Android TV devices. Google announced last year that the Apple TV app would be coming to Android TV devices, starting with the 2020 Chromecast. The Chromecast received the app in February and now others have received it. Google’s G10 Android TV remote works with the Chromecast and Shield TV, but not with Fire TVs

The Google-designed G10 remote is going to quickly become ubiquitous with Android TV as more and more streaming device manufacturers are choosing to include this remote with their streamers, and for good reason. In a sea of pretty horrible Android TV remotes, the G10 easily stands out as one of the best, thanks to a plentiful selection of buttons and a very close resemblance to the Fire TV remote in both size and button layout. Unfortunately, the G10 does not work with Fire TVs, Firesticks, or Fire TV Cubes, but it does work with the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV as well as the Nvidia Shield TV. New NVIDIA Shield TV Remote and Controller in code suggest new hardware is coming

XDA Developers has discovered new remote and controller codenames in the NVIDIA Shield TV’s software source code that could mean new hardware is in the works. NVIDIA has confirmed that the codenames “stormcaster” and “friday,” which are explicitly referenced in the code as a controller and remote, refer to products that have not launched publicly. NVIDIA Shield TV can now stream 4K content from Google Play

It took a while, but the NVIDIA Shield TV is now able to stream 4K movies and TV shows from Google Play. Google added 4K content to their marketplace when the Chromecast Ultra debuted last year, but strangley, the new Shield TV didn’t launch with access to that library. That misstep has now been corrected, which adds another 4K source to NVIDIA’s lineup. You can also now cast 4K content to the Shield TV.

NVIDIA Shield TV update v5.0 rolling out to 1st-gen devices

Older 1st-gen NVIDIA Shield TVs are finally starting to receive the 5.0 software update. This update adds some of the new capabilities that come with the new NVIDIA Shield TV to the older hardware.
