AFTVnews turns 7 years old

Seven years ago today, I started this site because I thought it would be fun to share all the interesting things that could be done with the Fire TV. A small group of you started to visit the site regularly to see what I had to share. That turned into a few hundred people, then a few thousand, then tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands of people. Now there are millions of you reading my posts and using my apps on a regular basis. I’ve said it plenty of times but I’ll keep saying it. I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to turn this fun hobby into a full-time job that supports me and my family. I took a year “off” to see what it would be like working for Amazon on the other side of the Fire TV world but when I decided it wasn’t for me, you all were ready and waiting to welcome me back. I’ve been back almost a year now and I’m loving what I do here more than ever. Thank you for sticking with me and for your continued patronage.

Discussion Post for Fire TV Stick 4K

Many people are asking me to post about, and comment on, a certain image related to the Fire TV Stick 4K that has recently surfaced online. Due to the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) I signed when I started working for Amazon, I cannot comment on the image. Since comments related to the image are leaking into other unrelated posts, I have moved those comments to this post for you all to use as a central place to discuss the image.

New page for Recent Comments on AFTVnews

Someone asked me if there was a way to see the most recent comments posted on AFTVnews in one place. I thought it was an interesting request, so, for anyone who is interested, you can now see the 50 latest comments at It’s just a simple page that, for each recent comment, displays the post title, the recent comment, and the quoted comment that is being replied to, if applicable. You can also get to the Recent Comments page through a link in the navigation menu at the top of the site.

Amazon Fire TV’s most popular VPN improves network speed by 2.5x

IPVanish, the most popular VPN app used by Fire TV users, has announced the completion of a network upgrade that they say will increase server network throughput by 2.5x. Starting back in February of last year, IPVanish began upgrading their server network cards from 10 Gbps to 25 Gbps and now enters 2021 with, what they claim, is the fastest VPN in the world. If you tried IPVanish in the past and weren’t impressed, especially if it was more than a year ago, it might be worth giving the service another try. Their current plans cost $4.99 for 1 month or $39.99 for 1 year. While IPVanish, unfortunately, doesn’t offer a free trial, they do offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on their annual plan only if you cancel within 30 days.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from my family to yours! May today, and all days, be filled with love and happiness. Even though I wasn’t around last year to keep this little tradition of posting a picture of me and my kids on Christmas going, thank you for being here for its return. Leaving Amazon and returning to this site was a scary decision, but you all welcomed me back with open arms. I was worried that the site wouldn’t bounce back from such a long departure, but there are more of you visiting now than ever before. Your patronage makes it possible for me to support my family with the flexibility that lets me spend so much more time with them than most jobs would and, for that, I can’t thank you enough.
