HBO NOW app will become ‘HBO’ and HBO GO app will be removed on Fire TVs

Just a day after posting about the possibilities of what will become of the HBO apps on Fire TV devices, we now have some definitive answers. Amazon and HBO have still not reached an agreement to bring the new HBO MAX app to Fire TV devices, but they have reached an agreement to keep some kind of HBO app access on the device. On August 1st, the existing HBO NOW app will remain on Fire TV devices, but it will be renamed to simply ‘HBO.’ At the same time, the HBO GO app will be removed with no replacement app. Read more ›

HBO Go now available on the Amazon Fire TV Stick

When HBO Go arrived on the Amazon Fire TV in December of last year, Fire TV Stick owners were left empty handed. Amazon said the app would make its way to the Fire TV Stick “this Spring”. Well, it’s not officially Spring yet, but the wait for Fire TV Stick owners is over. HBO Go is now available on both the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.

HBO Go allows cable subscribers of the premium cable network streaming access to the network’s content. That is, of course, if your cable provider allows it. However, your cable providers death grip on HBO will soon come to an end. The network will be launching their new stand alone service, HBO Now, in a few weeks. The new service will not require a cable subscription, but instead cost $14.99 a month on its own as a stand-alone subscription. HBO Now will initially be exclusive to Apple products for 3 months, after which it’s expected to make it’s way to Fire TV devices.

HBO stand-alone subscription service reportedly launching in April for $15 per month

HBO’s upcoming subscription service will reportedly be called “HBO Now” and is expected to cost $15 per month, according to a report by International Business Times. For the first time, consumers will be able to subscribe to HBO directly without the need of a television subscription. The new service will debut with a new app, instead of using the existing HBO Go apps. The two apps will coexist, with HBO Go delegated for cable subscriber access and HBO Now used for stand-alone access.

No word on if or when the new service will arrive on the Fire TV. The report only mentions Apple being most aggressive in courting HBO to add the service to the Apple TV. When HBO Go arrived on the Fire TV last December, Amazon said the app would make its way to the Fire TV Stick this spring. That time frame aligns perfectly with this new service, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see both HBO Go and HBO Now on both devices come this spring.
