Amazon adds missing storage permission so apps can easily access all files in Fire OS 8 on the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K & 4K Max

Amazon has just pushed out a new software update to the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K and 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max that fixes a big omission in Fire OS 8 which was causing many apps to not work correctly. Being based on Android 11, the new operating system from Amazon comes with more stringent file access permissions for apps on the latest Fire TV Sticks. This better protects a user’s privacy, which is great. However, Amazon forgot to include the permission option that allows users to give apps, they deem safe and trustworthy, access to all files. Thankfully, the omission has now been corrected with the addition of the missing storage permission that can now give apps access to all files without the need to use special ADB commands. How to save recordings in TiviMate to External USB Storage in Fire OS 8 on the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K & 4K Max

This guide walks you through the steps of setting recordings in the TiviMate app to be saved to an external storage USB drive connected to a 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K and 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max running Fire OS 8. The stricter file access permissions of Android 11, which is what Fire OS 8 is based on, prevent some apps like TiviMate from accessing external USB storage, so the system picker Files app must be used to grant access. While this guide is specific to the TiviMate app, the general process should be similar for granting most apps access to external USB storage drives. Read more ›

The 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K and 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max support connecting a USB drive for external storage but the stricter file access permissions in Fire OS 8 on these latest Fire TV devices can cause issues when apps try to access the external storage. The solution is to use the pre-installed default Files app to grant the app you are using permission to access specific folders on your external storage drive. Unfortunately, the Files app is very difficult to navigate because it is not made to be used with a remote control. This guide walks you through the specific steps to take to use the Files app on a Fire TV running Fire OS 8 to grant an app access to external USB storage. Read more ›
