How to sideload apps like Kodi or SPMC on the Amazon Fire TV & Stick using Downloader

Last Updated: February 26, 2019

This guide will walk you through the steps of installing (a.k.a. sideloading) a 3rd-party app, like Kodi, onto any Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick. This guide uses my own app, called Downloader, which is available for free from the Amazon Appstore. You do not need a computer, an external drive, a keyboard, ADB, or anything else to follow this guide. All you need is your Fire TV remote and about a minute of your time. This is currently the quickest way to sideload apps on the Fire TV or Firestick, and is easier than using ES File Explorer. Read more ›

Downloader v1.1.7 is now live with more bug fixes for Fire TV 3 and other models

Downloader version 1.1.7 is now live in the Amazon Fire TV Appstore. This version hopefully fixes the last few remaining issues that were preventing the app from not downloading certain files correctly. I’ve actually split the code into a Fire OS 5 and Fire OS 6 version temporarily so that any potential bugs that make it in while I work on Fire TV 3 compatibility don’t affect older devices. (That is what happened with the v1.1.4 update, which broke certain file downloads on older Fire TV models.) There aren’t two listings and you don’t have to do anything special to get the right version. The Fire TV will automatically download the right version from the Amazon Appstore. I’ll merge the code back together in a future update once I’m confident everything is stable.

I’m sorry if having so many updates recently has been annoying. Just as my developer and I work into the night to fix issues and push out an update, we wake up to newly reported issues and get right back into it. That has been our cycle ever since the Fire TV 3 was released. Development costs haven’t been cheap, so if you appreciate the app, please consider donating through its home screen in-app purchase buttons or by supporting me on Patreon.

Downloader v1.1.4 is now live — Fixes issue preventing Fire TV 3 from installing APKs

Version 1.1.4 of my Downloader app is now live and available for all Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Edition televisions to use. The main purpose of this release is to fix an issue that was preventing owners of the new Fire TV 3 from installing APK files. If you have version 1.1.3 installed and can’t get your Fire TV to update the app, you can always uninstall it and then reinstall to get the latest version.

As Fire TV 3s began arriving yesterday, the issue with Downloader was discovered around mid-day and I had a fixed version completed and submitted that evening. If you appreciate the quick turnaround, please consider supporting the app by donating through the buttons on the app’s home screen or by supporting me on Patreon.

Downloader app incompatible with Amazon Fire TV 3 – Fix has already been submitted and is pending Amazon approval

The current 1.1.3 version of my Downloader app in the Amazon appstore is not compatible with the new Amazon Fire TV 3. When you try to install an APK file within Downloader, the APK does not install and a message saying “No app found to handle this file” appears. I have fixed the issue and have already submitted an updated 1.1.4 version of Downloader to the appstore. The update just needs to be approved by Amazon first, which usually takes about 24 hours, so the update should be live tomorrow. In the meantime, you can use Downloader to download files as usual and then switch to the free app Total Commander in order to install APKs. Simply navigate to the “Internal shared storage” > “Downloader” directory inside Total Commander and select the APKs you want to install.

Browser Plugin now available for Downloader app on Android TV

When I released my Downloader app on the Google Play Store for Android TV devices, I was forced to remove the built-in browser because Google would otherwise not approve the app. I’m happy to say that I have come up with a solution that allows Android TV users to restore the browser part of the app back in by sideloading a browser plugin that I am releasing today. Downloader app now available in Google Play Store for Android TV

Many of you have asked for this for a while and now it’s here. My Downloader app is now available in the Google Play Store for Android TV devices. It took much more work than I originally expected to make the app work on Android TV and get accepted into the Android TV appstore. This is mostly because Google would not accept the app for Android TV if it had a built-in web browser, which is pretty ridiculous because there are already approved browsers for Android TV in the Google Play Store. I was unfortunately forced to disable the browser in the app to get it accepted, but it is finally available for the NVIDIA Sheild TV, Mi Box, Nexus Player, and all other Android TV devices. Downloader app for the Amazon Fire TV passes 5 Million Users

My Downloader app for the Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Edition television has just passed 5 million users. There were 1 million new users that tried the app last month alone. The app has also just passed 7,000 reviews while maintaining a 4.5 out of 5 star rating and has held the #1 free app spot in the entire Amazon appstore for most of the last few months. Thank you to everyone who has supported the app through in-app donations and through Patreon. It’s only through your generosity that I have been able to keep the app 100% free without any ads, while continuing to pay my awesome developer Johannes Bramauer to add new features and improve the app. Read more ›

Downloader app for the Amazon Fire TV reaches 2.5 Million Users

It was just a short while ago that my Downloader app for the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick reached the unimaginable milestone of 1 million users. Now, just 2 months later, the app has been installed by over 2.5 million users. The recent exponential growth is in no small part due to the Kodi team declaring that my app is “the only correct way of installing Kodi on Amazon devices.” Thank you to everyone who has kept development of the app going by donating through the app and/or becoming patrons through Patreon. The next update with new features should be out very soon. Read more ›

Downloader app v1.1.2 update adds Favorites and Browser Menu

The new version 1.1.2 update to my Downloader app has just gone live for the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. The update got stuck in Amazon’s review process, but has finally made it through. The two big new features are favorites and a browser menu. Favorites (a.k.a. bookmarks) allow you to easily save and load websites you visit often and the browser menu gives you quick access to those favorites, the ability to favorite the page you’re viewing, and a convenient JavaScript toggle. Additionally, this update adds German language translations throughout the entire app. I’ve also revamped the Downloader page on AFTVnews with screenshots and detailed documentation about all of the app’s features.
