CNN+ to shut down one month after launch

CNN+, the paid streaming service from CNN that launched less than a month ago is already dead. The cable news network has announced that the service is shutting down on April 30th. CNN+ was meant to be a companion service to the CNN cable channel, as opposed to a replacement, like most channels that launch “+” services. That clearly didn’t go over well with consumers as estimates indicate the service received only 150,000 sign-ups and was seeing only 10,000 active daily users. CNN is giving employees, hired soley for the new service, pay and benefits for the next 90 days and at least six months’ severance.

CNN+ streaming service launches on Fire TV and Apple TV — Not available on Roku or Android TV

CNN has launched its new CNN+ streaming service today. Fire TV and Apple TV are the only TV streaming platforms that currently support the service, as CNN has not reached a deal with Roku or Android/Google TV yet. The service costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year, however, an introductory offer for the next four weeks knocks the monthly cost down to $2.99 per month. CNN says that subscribing during the discounted period will lock in the cheaper rate for life as long as you maintain an active subscription. The service does not use a new app and is, instead, accessed through the existing CNN app. If you think this is a way to watch CNN live without a cable subscription, think again. The service is launching with about a dozen new weekly shows and access to thousands of hours of on-demand CNN content, but it does not provide a live stream of the CNN channel. CNN CTO Robyn Peterson says “we view CNN Plus as being additive. It’s a totally new thing that’s a complimentary product to CNN on linear television.”

Disney+ to launch an ad-supported plan and CNN+ reveals pricing with special early bird lifetime offer

Disney has announced that it intends to launch an ad-supported plan for its Disney+ streaming service. The new plan will launch later this year in the U.S. and will expand to international markets in 2023. The plan will exist alongside the current ad-free plan, which costs $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, and, presumably, cost less, but Disney has not said how much it will cost at this time. CNN has, however, just revealed for the first time the cost of its upcoming CNN+ streaming service. CNN+, which is said to provide new programming that is not available on the cable news network, will cost $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. CNN has said that anyone who signs up within the first 4 weeks of the streaming service’s debut will get 50% off the monthly plan for life, as long as they remain subscribers. The news agency is expected to launch the new service later this month but has not provided a specific launch date yet.

CNN to launch CNN Plus streaming service in Q1 2022

CNN has announced that it will be launching a new streaming service early next year in Q1 2022, called CNN+. The service will launch in the US only, but the company is looking to eventually make the service available worldwide. The service is expected to compliment the cable network, as opposed to replacing it, by providing new personality-driven programming that is not available through the existing CNN linear channels. It doesn’t seem like a CNN+ subscription on its own, without a traditional paid TV subscription, will provide access to the live news channel. Pricing for the new streaming service has not been announced, but there will not be an ad-supported version at launch.

CNNgo app arrives on the Amazon Fire TV with live streaming CNN news

cnn-cnngo-news-header
CNN has released their CNNgo app on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. The app’s pending arrival was revealed last month when CNN updated their activation website to include an option for the Fire TV prior to there being a Fire TV app available. The app features a live stream of the cable news channels 24/7 coverage, as well as full length on-demand episodes for many of the network’s shows. You will need to activate the app with a participating cable or satellite subscription before viewing either the live stream or full length on-demand content. What you don’t need to activate the app to view are the numerous shorter clips available through the app. Expect to see the occasional pre-roll ad here and there when viewing on-demand clips. The CNNgo app is compatible with all Fire TV and Fire TV Stick models, new or old, and works with either Fire OS 3 or 5.

CNN likely bringing live news app to the Amazon Fire TV

cnn-go-cnngo-activate-fire-tv

It looks like CNN may soon release a Fire TV app with a live stream of their news coverage. Reddit user 08830 noticed that CNN’s device activation page currently has the option to activate apps on the Fire TV, even though no such app exists. The page says “get access to all of CNN’s live and original programming,” so it looks like Fire TV devices will be getting a version of the news outlets CNNgo app, which launched on Roku last December and on Apple TV a couple months ago. Both Roku and Apple TV apps require a cable subscription to access live and on-demand content, so it’s very likely the same will be true if and when the app arrives on the Fire TV.
