Amazon original movie ‘Elvis & Nixon’ coming to Prime Video on August 25

evlis-nixon-amazon-original-movie

The Amazon original movie Elvis & Nixon is set to arrive on Prime Video next month on August 25. The movie premiered in theaters in April, giving it just a 4 month turnaround time from big screen to Prime Video. When Amazon first announced they’d start making original movies last year, they said they’d be bringing their movies to Prime much quicker than the 10 month average it usual takes movies to make their way to subscription services. So far they’ve made good on that promise with their first two movie releases, Chi-Raq and Creative Control, which made their way to Prime members in 3 months and 2 months.

Due to Amazon’s recent buying spree at Sundance, we can probably expect to see a new original movie come to Prime once a month. Love & Friendship premiered in theaters in May, The Neon Demon debuted in June, and Woody Allen’s Café Society just premiered last week. All three should make their way to Prime Video later this year.

amazon-original-16-emmy-awards
This year’s Primetime Emmy Award nominations have been announced and Amazon has landed 16 nominations for their original series. Transparent, which took home 5 Emmy wins last year, has received the majority of Amazon’s nominations with 10 total. It is up for best comedy series and show star Jeffrey Tambos has been nominated for lead actor in a comedy. Tambor’s co-stars Judith Light and Gaby Hoffmann are both in the running for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy, while Bradley Whitford and Melora Hardin have been nominated for outstanding guest actor and actress in a comedy. Transparent has also received nods for production design, casting, costumes, and outstanding directing for a comedy by Dave Mandel.

The Man in the High Castle has been recognized for special effects, production design, cinematography, and main title design. Mozart in the Jungle is in the running for outstanding sound mixing for a comedy and Catastrophe has been nominated for outstandin writing for a comedy. The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will held September 18th, and it’s worth noting that if Amazon wins an Emmy, there’s a good chance they’ll have a one day sale the following week that offers Prime membership for $68, like they did after last year’s win.

creative-control-movie

Amazon’s second original movie, Creative Control, is now available to stream for free for Prime members. The movie premiered in theaters in March and is being made available on Prime video exactly two months later. This short turn around from theatrical release to Prime availability is the same timeframe we saw with Amazon’s first original movie, Chi-Raq.

Amazon has been busy buying up movie rights all year. With over a dozen titles in their catalogue, Prime members can expect to see original movie releases on a regular basis. Amazon’s third original movie, and one of their most anticipated, Elvis & Nixon, was released in theaters last month, so we’ll see if it arrives on Prime as fast as their first two originals. Love & Friendship, premeiring in theaters tomorrow, will be Amazon’s fourth original movie, followed by The Neon Demon with a June theatrical release.

Amazon Studios reportedly in talks to create original Virtual Reality content

amazon-studios-vr-virtual-reality

Amazon Studios, which is responsible for much of Amazon’s original content, is reportedly in talks with virtual reality companies about developing original virtual reality content, according to The Wrap. This news comes just a few weeks after a job posting revealed that Amazon is looking to hire a senior manager to lead a VR team tasked to create a “platform and interface for immersive storytelling.” It seems evident that Amazon has its eyes set on VR as the next entertainment frontier to tackle. Details are slim, so it’s unknown if that means they’re merely out to produce VR specific movies and shows, or if they have a new hardware platform in mind.
