Amazon to discontinue Luna cloud gaming Retro and Family channels this week

About a year ago, Amazon expanded its Luna cloud gaming catalog with the addition of a Family games channel and a Retro games channel. Each new channel, costing $5.99 and $4.99 per month, respectively, included its own set of playable games. Amazon has now decided to discontinue these channels and will be merging most of the games into the $9.99/month Luna+ channel at no additional cost. Read more ›

Here is the list of the first free Luna games for Prime members in 2023

Amazon is continuing to offer free Luna cloud gaming for Prime members into the new year. For the month of January, Prime members can play Beach Buggy Racing 2: Hot Wheels Edition, Monster Truck Championship, Lumines Remastered, and The Jackbox Party Pack 2, which includes five different party games. Those first two have been included in the list of free games for Prime members in the past, but Lumines and the Jackbox Pack are new offerings. These Luna games are playable on most Fire TV models, computers, phones, tablets, and newer Samsung Smart TVs. They work best with the Luna Controller, thanks to its ability to connect directly to Luna’s game servers over wifi for reduced latency, but generic Bluetooth, Xbox, or PlayStation controllers work as well. If you don’t have a controller to use, you can use your phone as a virtual controller to give the service a try without spending any money.

Prime members can now play their Ubisoft PC games on Amazon Luna for free

Ever since Amazon Luna launched, customers have been able to subscribe to a Ubisoft+ Channel which allows them to play about 40 different Ubisoft games for $17.99 a month. If you prefer to purchase games individually instead of subscribing to a monthly service, you’ll be happy to hear that Amazon and Ubisoft have announced the ability to play select Ubisoft games you own on Amazon Luna for free if you are a Prime member. The game has to be among the approximately 40 Ubisoft games currently compatible with Amazon Luna. If you already own any of the listed games, you can sync your Ubisoft account within the settings of the Luna app to make your compatible library of games available in Luna. Any future purchases of compatible games from the Ubisoft Store will automatically show up in Luna. This announcement doesn’t change the ability for Prime members to play a selection of Luna games for free each month, as Amazon says that will continue as usual.

Fire TVs gain a new Games Hub for discovering Appstore Games, Luna Cloud Games, and Twitch Streams

Amazon has added a new Games Hub to Fire TV devices, which can be accessed by selecting the “Games” tile on the Fire TV search screen. The new hub is heavily focused on Amazon’s Luna cloud gaming service, which is understandable since that’s currently the most popular type of gaming being done on Fire TV devices, but you’ll also find local downloadable games from the Amazon Appstore being highlighted, as well as Twitch streams and game trailers. How to continue using a Luna Controller if Amazon Luna cloud gaming shuts down — Google take note

Google announced this week that it will be shutting down its Stadia cloud gaming service in January. That has left owners of the Stadia controller trying to figure out a way to continue using the WiFi-only Stadia controller wirelessly with other devices once the Stadia service is gone. There are several community efforts underway to hack the Stadia controller and keep it out of landfills, so, if Amazon Luna is ever shut down, hopefully, the same type of effort will spring up to keep the Luna controller functional. Uh… oh wait… Amazon already built Bluetooth into the Luna controller from the beginning, so you just need to hold the Action and B buttons for 3 seconds to put it into pairing mode so it’s discoverable by any Fire TV, Android device, Windows PC, or Mac. However, if you want a lag-free wired connection without Luna, then you’ll need someone to figure out a hack and make drivers for the Luna controller. Uh… oh wait… Amazon already provides Windows drivers for wired connections to the Luna controller via its USB-C port and it already works wired with Macs and Android devices without any drivers. In summary, if Amazon Luna disappears, the Luna controller will remain very functional as a Bluetooth or wired controller for use with Fire TVs, Fire Tablets, Android devices, Windows PCs, and Macs, just as it already is today, because selling a $69 controller that only works with a single service is downright stupid, Google.

October brings 6 new Free Games for Prime Members to play on Amazon Luna

Google has announced that it is shutting down its Stadia cloud gaming service, but Amazon’s Luna cloud gaming service seems to still be going strong. As it does each month, Amazon is adding new games to Luna next month for paid subscribers and rotating in six new games that Prime members can play for free. The free games in October for Prime members are Blair Witch, Earthworm Jim 2, Metro Exodus, Monster Truck Championship, SkateBIRD, and Star Wars Pinball. If you’re a paid subscriber to the Luna+ Channel, you’ll see Chicken Police — Paint it RED! and Martha is Dead added in October. Family Channel subscribers are getting Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader? added, but there aren’t any new games for the Retro Channel, Ubisoft+ Channel, or the Jackbox Games Channel. As always, these Luna games are playable on most Fire TV models, computers, phones, tablets, and newer Samsung Smart TVs. They work best with the Luna Controller, thanks to its ability to connect directly to Luna’s game servers over wifi for reduced latency, but generic Bluetooth, Xbox, or PlayStation control works as well. If you don’t have a controller to use, you can use your phone as a virtual controller to give the service a try without spending any money.

Amazon Luna cloud gaming is now available on select Samsung Smart TVs

Amazon and Samsung have announced that Amazon Luna cloud gaming is now available directly through the Samsung Gaming Hub on select Samsung Smart TVs. Luna joins other cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass, Nvidia GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Utomik which are already available on Samsung TVs. Unfortunately, access to these cloud gaming services is only available on 2022 Samsung smart TVs and M-series smart monitors. This partnership with Samsung is the first time that Amazon Luna has been made available on a device other than a Fire TV, phone, tablet, or computer. Both the Luna Controller and standard Bluetooth controllers will work to play Luna games on Samsung Smart TVs.
