Amazon Fire TV Recast power usage while Idle, Recording, and Streaming

A reader asked me to test the Amazon Fire TV Recast’s power usage, so I pulled out the trusty Kill A Watt meter and ran a few tests. Even though the included power supply is capable of outputting 50 watts of power, I found that the Fire TV Recast used between 9 to 15 watts of power, depending on what it was doing a the time. How to safely Restart and Unplug the Amazon Fire TV Recast

The Amazon Fire TV Recast is a unique device in the Fire TV family because it has a spinning hard drive inside. This means that you should take a bit of care when cutting power to the device because, theoretically, data on the hard drive could be corrupted if the Fire TV Recast loses power while it’s actively writing to the drive. Since the Fire TV Recast cannot be shut down or turned off, it’s likely that Amazon built-in safeguards for unexpected power loss, but it can’t hurt to be extra cautious. Here’s the safest way I’ve found to reboot and/or unplug the Fire TV Recast. Read more ›

Amazon Fire TV Recast takes about 2 Seconds to Change Channels

With over the air tuners, a common concern is how fast the device is able to switch from one channel to another. I’ve already seen the question come up a few times regarding the Amazon Fire TV Recast so I recorded a quick video showing how fast the channels switch. As you can see, channel flipping on the Recast takes about 2 seconds. The channels used in the video were live and unbuffered. The Fire TV Recast was actively recording a different channel while I conducted the test. The video is unedited, so the timing of everything is exactly how it is when using the Fire TV Recast.
