Zoom app arives on Amazon Omni Series Fire TV Smart TVs for 2-way video calling

Fire TV Omni Series Smart TVs are now compatible with the Zoom app for two-way video conferencing. These TVs are only the second Fire TV models to work with Zoom, after the Fire TV Cube was the first to gain compatibility earlier this year. To use Zoom with either a Fire TV Omni Series Smart TV or a Fire TV Cube, you need to connect a USB camera to the Fire TV. Amazon recommends the Logitech C920 (1080p, ~$65), Logitech C922x (1080p, ~$80), and Logitech C310 (720p, ~$27) webcams, but any cameras that support the USB Video Class (UVC) standard with at least 720p resolution and 30fps will work. Once the camera is connected to the Smart TV’s USB port or the Fire TV Cube’s microUSB port with an adpater, like these from StarTech, UGREEN, and CableCreation, you can launch the Zoom app and login. If your calendar is linked to Alexa and your Zoom meting is on your calendar, you can say “Alexa, join my Zoom meeting” to automatically join your next meeting.

Amazon’s own Fire TV Omni & 4-Series Smart TVs to gain Airplay 2, HomeKit, Alexa Home Theater support, and more this month

Amazon has announced that its line of Fire TV Smart TVs, the Omni Series and 4-Series, will be gaining several new features “over the coming weeks.” One of those features is Apple AirPlay 2 support, which allows iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac owners to easily mirror and cast their screen to the TV. Along with AirPlay 2 will come support for Apple Homekit, which allows for basic control of the TV through Apple’s voice assistant Siri. Amazon also says its TVs will also gain support for Alexa Home Theater groups, which allows you to use Echo devices as wireless speakers. The list of compatible Echos is, unfortunately, smaller with these TVs than with other Fire TV models, and includes only the Echo Studio, Echo (3rd & 4th Gen), Echo Dot (4th Gen), and Echo Plus (2nd Gen). Lastly, only the Fire TV Omni is also getting access to Zoom video calls soon, when you connect a USB webcam. These features are expected to be available later this month.

Amazon announces its first Amazon-built TVs — The Fire TV Omni Series w/ hands-free Alexa & Fire TV 4-Series Smart TVs

Amazon has done what has been rumored, if not anticipated, for a very long time and announced its own Amazon-built smart TVs. These new Fire TV-branded TVs come in two varieties, a Fire TV Omni Series and a Fire TV 4-Series, where the primary difference between the two is that the Omni versions feature far-field microphones for hands-free Alexa voice control, in addition to a voice remote, and the 4-series relies on only a voice remote. These new TVs come in 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, and 75″ screen sizes, with the two largest sizes offered only in the Omni Series with hands-free Alexa. All models feature 4K Ultra HD resolution, with support for HDR 10 and HLG high dynamic range, but the two largest sizes also support Dolby Vision. Read more ›
