Amazon’s lightning deal on its 50″ 4K Fire TV Smart TV sold out in 5 minutes

Amazon has a lot of great deals on its devices during Prime Day this year, many of which are at all-time low prices, but none were better than the 50″ Amazon Fire TV 4-Series 4K Smart TV for $99.99. At an impressive 78% off its regular price of $469.99, it was certainly the deal to get. However, as a lightning deal with limited stock allocated for the rock bottom price, it was pretty obvious that the deal would sell out fast. The sale went live at 6:00 am PT today, as expected, and within 3 minutes the real-time purchase tally indicated that 50% of the TVs were accounted for. Around 6:05 am, just 5 minutes after the deal went live, the purchase count indicated 100% and the deal was sold out. Read more ›

Amazon’s own Fire TV Omni & 4-Series Smart TVs to gain Airplay 2, HomeKit, Alexa Home Theater support, and more this month

Amazon has announced that its line of Fire TV Smart TVs, the Omni Series and 4-Series, will be gaining several new features “over the coming weeks.” One of those features is Apple AirPlay 2 support, which allows iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac owners to easily mirror and cast their screen to the TV. Along with AirPlay 2 will come support for Apple Homekit, which allows for basic control of the TV through Apple’s voice assistant Siri. Amazon also says its TVs will also gain support for Alexa Home Theater groups, which allows you to use Echo devices as wireless speakers. The list of compatible Echos is, unfortunately, smaller with these TVs than with other Fire TV models, and includes only the Echo Studio, Echo (3rd & 4th Gen), Echo Dot (4th Gen), and Echo Plus (2nd Gen). Lastly, only the Fire TV Omni is also getting access to Zoom video calls soon, when you connect a USB webcam. These features are expected to be available later this month.

Amazon has done what has been rumored, if not anticipated, for a very long time and announced its own Amazon-built smart TVs. These new Fire TV-branded TVs come in two varieties, a Fire TV Omni Series and a Fire TV 4-Series, where the primary difference between the two is that the Omni versions feature far-field microphones for hands-free Alexa voice control, in addition to a voice remote, and the 4-series relies on only a voice remote. These new TVs come in 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, and 75″ screen sizes, with the two largest sizes offered only in the Omni Series with hands-free Alexa.
