meh. plus the subscription plus the disk plus the set top box. $150+$150+$50+$35+$35=$420 for two sets sharing two tuners and a 1t disk. On BF, you could have gotten two Roamio/OTAs with lifetime for $20 less. Same 1t of disk, but eight tuners and a more robust installation.
Not familar with Tablo but not following your price breakdown. I assume Tablo=$150, Lifetime Guide Sub=$150, 1T HDD=$50(?) but what are the two $35 for?
As a TiVo Roamio user (basic model 846, not the OTA), and follower of the TiVoCommunity Forum, I can’t agree with your rosy picture of that option.
1. Tablo uses GraceNote guide data, much superior to the Rovi guide data used by TiVo, which is very poor and results in myriad forum complaints.
2. TiVo is now promoting a new UI (“Hydra”) which is very controversial and is being refused by many users. Eventually they will probably force it on all users.
3. TiVo doesn’t provide cross-platform viewing (e.g., comparable to the Tablo app on a Fire TV)

you need a roku or fire tv on each television.
I would think commercial skipping with the tablo would be quite clunky over a wifi streaming device. You can stream amazon prime from the Roamio and watch recordings directly from the Tivo without a another streaming device.
Already have a HDD I’m not using. Already have streamers on each tv, so basically it’s the $150 and a $5/month charge with no commitment. So your logic of all these extra costs are really worse for tivo users. The mini is $100 each at its best price. Plus the mica and POE stuff if you go with the Roamio. (Bolt has it built in).
Apples to oranges. I already have a HDHomeRun and PlexPass, and my TV has a built in Roku, so why pay for anything, right? Do what works best for you.
Is there a DVR that can act as a pass through for cable TV service that can both record and skip commercials? I rent a DVR from my cable TV provider and of course it doesn’t skip commercials or has much capacity. If there were such a device, it would be purely passive that sits in between my TV and the real DVR since it’s the DVR that decodes the DRM encrypted signal and does the channel tuning and scheduling.
You want a purely passive DVR that sits between your DVR and TV??
It sounds like you just want a better DVR.
There are a few options. Tablo is only for OTA.
You’re going to need to rent a cable card from your cable tv provider. One option is to just go with Tivo.
Or
You can journey down the path that many of us have taken where we use a network TV tuner and have another device act as a DVR. Windows 7 has DVR software. Plex with Plex Pass. I think HDHomeRun has some DVR software.
Not mentioned, but biggest deal killer for me is NO SURROUND SOUND.
The TIVO OTA is a fixed price $199 (no monthly) and seems to beat this not only on price but also because the TIVO includes a HD and has extra add-on elements like the TIVO mini for other rooms. I don’t see the value here.
How is the User Interface on the Tablo? I have a TiVo Roamio OTA, and I like it ok. It’s the $15-a-month user guide I can’t handle. I mean, I’m paying $9 a month to Netflix for tons of awesome content, and I’m paying TiVo $15 a month just for the guide? That blows.
Plus, the TiVo Mini is way overpriced, so we’re limiting ourselves to OTA programming on only one TV, which occasionally leads to marital strife. :/
The new Roamio OTA comes with lifetime service included for $340 on Amazon and a 1TB drive. It will pay for itself in 2 years.
