Sonos is rumored to release a new Android-based TV streaming box in 2024

Sonos is looking to release its own set-top streaming media player in 2024 according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke with Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. This will be an entirely new market for Sonos, which is best known for its premium speakers. The new TV box is said to run a custom operating system based on Android, much like Amazon’s Fire OS for Fire TV devices.

The rumored Sonos TV streaming box, codenamed “Pinewood,” is said to be a premium device that will cost between $150 to $200. That puts it in league with the Fire TV Cube, Nvidia Shield TV, and Apple TV 4K. Unsurprisingly, the sources say it will support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

In addition to running streaming service apps, the TV box is said to serve as a “central hub for a customer’s other Sonos devices.” It’s probably pretty safe to expect that the TV box will seamlessly integrate with Sonos’ home theater surround sound speakers, like the Sonos Arc and Sonos Beam. The TV box will be controllable through both the Sonos app and via voice.

During an earnings call this month, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said we can expect to see a “major new product in a new multibillion-dollar category” in 2024. That could be referring to the rumored TV box, which is said to be released as early as the end of 2024, but it could be referring to premium Sonos headphones, which are also rumored to be coming next year.

Good to hear, we need more android based tv streaming boxes since the firestick will be unusable here soon.

  2. Tingo says:

Looks like what will hopefully be a slew of new devices to replace firesticks and cubes. Amazon must be looking at this and wondering if closing their os is the right move. Nice to see.

  3. Mike says:

Sweet, hopefully they’ll include some awesome intrusive ads of stuff we won’t watch. ;)

  4. Thom says:

    this is great news

I don’t think amazon is worried as they are going to move to their own OS. For now, even though they are streaming ads on all their devices, until they take a $$$ hit nothing is gonna change. Me, I’m moving away from Amazon & going with samaung & roku.

There’s a need for a new power user box with all the hardware now that the Shield is aging out. A Google store supported Android box with ample cpu/gpu muscle for high bitrates and good upscaling, gb ethernet, as well as all the latest licensed sound and screen technology. State of the art wifi ofc.
Speaking for myself, I’ve sometimes had to wait it out, but always found a successor to my favorite box.
From a firmware modified Panasonic DVD player with a USB media player to the awesome WDTV Pro, a true “customer’s” product. Then as that was on its last legs and I was wondering what to do, along came the second gen FireTV box, a great device, possibly the last time Amazon prioritized what a customer wanted over what they did. As the FireTV box aged out I moved to the 2019 Shield Pro and have been happily rocking with that since.
Maybe Sonos, who is not a streaming company just like WD, early Amazon, and NVIdia weren’t streaming companies trying to force an ecosystem, can build the next generation power-user streaming box.
A guy can dream anyway. I’m sure there is a market that is willing to pay if someone is just willing to take our money.

Slightly off topic, but I just bought a Chromecast 4K on sale and I’m wondering if that’s still a good choice for an Android based streamer.

I’m from the UK so the ONN isn’t an option and the Shield is getting on a bit.

  7. Bob says:

Just bought my first Sonos speaker but I’m afraid this TV box will be like $2,000.

  8. Tingo says:

Only if your not bothered about channel 4,neither the chrome cast or shield are lisenced for it, only amazon, roku and apple.

  9. Rich says:

Shame that it probably still won’t motivate Google to release a more premium product to compete with this, Shield, or Apple TV.

  10. Joe Brampton says:

Needs to be RK3588 based or upcoming S905X5 or else it’s just another overpriced device
