Small software update rolling out to some Amazon Fire TV devices

A new software update is currently rolling out to some Amazon Fire TV devices. The update carries the same 5.2.6.0 version number as the previous software version, but the build number has increased from 587444320 to 587444820. I’ve only heard of the 1st-gen Fire TV box receiving this update, but I do not know if other devices will also receive it.

When a new software update rolls out with a new build number but the same version number, it usually indicates that the previous software version introduced a new bug that the new update is fixing. Since Amazon tends to not divulge which bugs are fixed, it’s difficult to know what changes this latest software update makes. If your device receives this update and you notice any changes or fixes, let us all know in the comments below.

It’s very likely they are patching this bug:

    https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/10/how-the-krack-attack-destroys-nearly-all-wi-fi-security/

I’d expect all FireTV models to be updated for it too.

I kind of thought that too, but I don’t think Amazon could act this fast. I don’t think Google has even begun patching the KRACK vulnerability.

I think vendors were notified of it a while back. Today was the official public announcement of the vulnerability. So it’s possible Amazon was ready to go with patches today.

But like you said, they don’t say much about these bug fix releases. So who knows.

I noticed that with the last update on 1st gen box it kept telling me my 780 DPI TV was not supported.
The only way to get it working was to was to select auto

I haven’t been able to watch any Amazon videos (or run some apps like HBOGO) for over a month. Got this update, and they work again.

unfortunately, i can’t update my 4k element tv. after unblocking updates, unrooting, and factory resetting, all i get is the update downloads, the update tries to install when turning off, it turns back on, and i am still on my original firmware (5.2.5.0 or whatever). -_-

the firmware that shipped with this thing is glitchy as hell, but factory resetting just removes my account… and nothing else.

any help would be appreciated. zero replies on xda. XD

The version number stays the same the build number changes. Read the article above and it’ll explain.

With rooted Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks, an incremental update first downloads and fails to install. Then a full update downloads and is able to install and remove root. Sounds like maybe the TV is trying to install the incremental update only and not getting the full update, which is the only type that can unroot a Fire TV.

After it downloads the update but before it restarts, check the /cache/ directory for the update file to see if it’s an incremental or full update that downloaded. An incremental update file will end in “#########-to-#########.bin” while a full update should end in “user_#########.bin”

If it’s a full update, then I don’t know what you can do other then trying to manually unroot and hope that lets it update. To do that you need to read up on what changes the rooting utility made and try to manually reverse them all.

If it’s an incrimental update, then your best bet is to try and get it to download the full update. Normally, after an incrimental update downloads on a rooted device (but before it reboots to install it), the device checks the system and the downloaded file. It should realize the system has been rooted and give an error on the About > Update section. Then if you back out of the settings area and go back in to check for updates again, it should download the full update the second time and be able to install it.

If its restarting without first downloading the full update, you could try to delete the incrimental update or swap out the file for a dummy one with the same name before it reboots. Your goal is to get it to think that there is something wrong with the incrimental update file so it hopefully downloads the full update on a second try.

You can also try these commands to clear out all past updates so you’re starting fresh:

      pm clear com.amazon.device.software.ota
      rm -f /cache/*.bin
      rm -f /sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.device.software.ota/files/*.bin

My voice microphone on the remote almost never works since the new interface, hopefully this fixes that as well.

I wish they were still selling Fire TV 2s, I was hoping to go to the 3 but the 3 looks like a downgrade.

My 1st gen was having troubles playing pretty much anything from anywhere – including Amazon. With the update it is working well again.

It could be a firmware patch or probably bringing the voice search within keyboards to the uk finally!?!?!

My 1st gen box seemed to be working perfectly and I got the update last weekend. It’s my bedroom Fire TV, so I use it less, but if anything is changed I can’t tell what it is.

I have this update on my first generation Fire Stick here in the UK. It’s working OK but seems a bit sluggish. It was installed on Sunday, 15 October 2017.

I have 1st gen stick. This build installed on Saturday October 14.
It was also seemed to have been working fine before the updates.

HI, Trying to download APKTime on new Fire Stick. Leveraged old link (which has worked perfectly in the past and trying to use the new link that you posted on Oct 1th. http://bit.ly/FSAPKT

After inputting url in Downloader for both links. The window is reflecting “Download CONNECTING” state.

Double checked settings in Firestick and Downloader and I’m able to retrieve video’s from Amazon and Netflix.

Any update on a pre-rooted rom for 587444820? My bueller is stuck on latest 587444320 as I can’t revert to stock with TWRP. Maybe this is why Netflix has been throwing and error and NFL Thurs Game night won’t work… I thought it was due to root.

    Paging rbox.
