As we wait for Sling TV to release their official Fire TV and Fire TV Stick app, most people have been sideloading the Android app available on Sling TV’s website. However, Sling TV has updated their Android app to detect “unsupported devices”, like the Fire TV, and not allow viewing. The good news is the old app still works great on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. You can download it here and use it while you wait for the official Fire TV app to be released.
Wow, what a lucky coincidence that I got my invite and sideloaded yesterday.
Screw companies like this… this whole era of digital licensing is ridiculous. First Apps that work on the PSP Vita but not on the PSP Vita TV, now Apps that work on Android, but go out of their way to block certain devices? Piss off.
Well, in this case they are only temporarily blocking it because it hasn’t been optimized for the Fire TV and they will be releasing said version soon. This is fairly common practice because companies worry that using a version that hasn’t been optimized for a device can ruin the user experience and put customers off of the product.
Although I personally think that’s a stupid reason because keeping it off the marketplace officially is enough to mitigate those concerns because the people that know how to circumvent that know that the reason it isn’t official is because it hasn’t been optimized yet.
