The Samsung SmartThings Hub is on sale for $49.99 on Amazon. That’s the lowest price this hub has ever been. The SmartThings hub can control a large array of smart home devices, both from Samsung themselves as well as other manufacturers. The hub works with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant and acts as a relay between Alexa and many devices that don’t yet work directly with Alexa.
Are these type of hubs still relevant? Why have they gone down in price so much ?
they are, they let you use zigbee and zwave devices
so mad, i had purchased a used gen 1 hub from ebay only days earlier for $42 , $8 and i could have had the new gen model but from what i rad there is not much difference besides 2 USB ports which really have no use so far AFAIK and the ability for the hub to still work for some things with no internet connection
there is a large community with all sorts of cool projects
the reason i purchased it is to get cheap $10 lixada h801 RGBWW wifi strip controllers working with alexa and IFTTT
i plan on controlling 5 separate strip controllers so it is much cheaper than buying 5 HUE strips or dresden electric controllers
even with the price of the hub, the controllers and an FTDI ttl usb to serial to flash the controllers
too bad the Chinese have not yet figured out that HUE zigbee is open source and that a cheap $10 or sub $10 RGBW controller that pairs with hue bridges would sell like hotcakes
it wonld not only have been a cheaper solution but a better one
