Update
Releasing ROMs with updates blocked by default causes issues with the initial Fire TV setup process, so ROMs will not be released with updates pre-blocked. See my update below for more information.
One of the first changes someone usual makes after rooting an Amazon Fire TV is to disable software updates so that the device does not lose root by installing an over the air update from Amazon. As an extra precaution, rbox has decided to disable software updates by default on all future pre-rooted ROMs that he releases. A second version of the brand new 5.0.5 pre-rooted ROM has already been released with this new change implimented. If you’d like software updates enabled, perhaps because you prefer to rely solely on your router to block updates or to keep your Fire TV as stock as possible, read on for instructions on how to reverse rbox’s update block.
To enable over-the-air software updates on rbox’s pre-rooted ROM:
- Connect to your Fire TV via ADB
- Run the command:
adb shell - Run the command:
su - Run the command:
mount -o remount,rw /system - Run the command:
chmod 644 /system/priv-app/DeviceSoftwareOTA/DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk - Run the command:
mount -o remount,ro /system - Run the command:
exit - Run the command:
exit - Disconnect via ADB and restart your Fire TV.
Update
2/12 12:39pm It appears that blocking updates by default has caused issues. If you factory reset a Fire TV with updates blocked by default, then you are unable to complete the initial setup due to the Fire TV being unable to check for updates. I have informed rbox of the issue. I have suggested a fix in the comments on this post, but it is untested, so I suggest the novice to either use 5.0.4 for now or wait for a new version of 5.0.5 to be released.
2/12 3:22pm Rbox has decided to not release ROMs with software updates blocked by default due to the issue it causes when going through the initial update process.
I decided to do a clean flash of this rom and due to it blocking updates automatically it is impossible to get passed the check for updates in the initial set up of the device. I can not get any further than connecting to my WiFi then I get the message unable to update your fire tv. I’m going to re flash 504 and then update.
Is there a known why around the issue that Bori has highlighted?
I have not tested this yet, but you should be able to boot into TWRP and follow my steps in this post to reverse the update block that rbox has added. You should then be able to complete the initial setup and block updates the old way yourself. Note that the devices IP is displayed on the TWRP home screen for you to use to make your ADB connection.
Again, I haven’t tested this suggestion, so if you’re not comfortable with the command line, you should just wait for rbox to fix the issue or revert his changes.
Alternatively, you can: flash 5.0.4, complete the setup, then flash 5.0.5.
I already re flashed 504 then updated to 505 and everything is working fine but hopefully now that this issue has been exposed a fix can be made and other will be aware of it so they don’t go through the same issue.
That’s a serious issue. I’ve inform rbox.
rbox has now made 5.0.5_r1 available again.
r3 released! This one disables the stock recovery to prevent stock rom installs. http://www.mediafire.com/download/gmfd7990crk7arq/sloane-5.0.5-rooted_r3.zip
I presume this talk is about Fire TV 2, correct?
