Those of you with rooted Fire TVs can now update your devices to software version 5.2.6.9, thanks to new pre-rooted ROMs created by Rbox. ROMs are available for the Fire TV 1, Fire TV 2, and now also for the Fire TV Stick 2, which was recently rooted for the first time. A ROM of this update for the Fire TV Stick 1 has not yet been released.

Rbox has now added the Fire TV Stick 2 to his list of supported rooted devices. ROMs for both 5.2.6.8 and 5.2.6.9 are available. Calling these ROMs a “pre-rooted” ROM is not entirely accurate. The rooting method for the Fire TV Stick 2 uses Magisk to perform a systemless root of whatever ROM you install through TWRP, so Rbox’s ROM for the Fire TV Stick 2 does not actually contain the root access, like it does for other Fire TV models. The presence of Magisk means that you can technically install the stock 5.2.6.9 update from Amazon and still have a rooted device.

The advantage of using Rbox’s ROMs for the Fire TV Stick 2, instead of the stock update image, is that Rbox has added add-on.d support to the stock image. This means that changes you make to the OS should be preserved when installing Rbox’s ROM, whereas installing the stock image will wipe out all system changes every time it is flashed.

Use TWRP custom recovery, by following this guide, to install these ROMs on your rooted device. As always, these ROMs cannot be used to root your device.
