Rbox has released a pre-rooted version of the 5.2.4.0 software update for the Amazon Fire TV 2. As always, you can download it over on XDA and install it using TWRP. This will allow those of you with rooted Fire TV 2s to update to the brand new user interface that is currently being pushed out by Amazon. If you have the means, be sure to thank rbox for his continued support by donating to him. While most non-rooted Fire TVs are still waiting for this update to arrive, rooted devices get to install it earlier than most thanks to rbox’s quick release.
After installing this, can the replaced launcher in my fire tv, the firestopper be retained?
great job guys, but for now the native app section wont show any icons, starting apps is only possible via settings section…
This is not true. See here: http://www.aftvnews.com/kodi-and-sideloaded-apps-are-fully-compatible-with-the-new-fire-tv-interface/
Is there a method to root a box already running this os?
Awesome news! I just flashed this image onto my Fire TV 2 box and everything seems to be running smoothly.
Overall I am enjoying the new look. This will take a bit getting used to, but I think this is a positive change overall. I feel the new look has a more polished look with keeping in mind it is for a streaming device. The old interface I felt was a bit thrown together.
Love that Rbox! Does it matter that I got a notification saying that SuperSU binary needs to be updated?
Comment from Rbox from XDA: “Yeah. I suspect it’s always been there, but this is the first time they’re actually showing notifications. I believe “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” with SuperSU. I might update to a newer one at some point, but for now, just ignore the notification.”
I fancy doing this on a new box thats just been opened – will there be a kodi icon if this method is used? Dont want to go to settings to open an app
Two things:
1.) Yes, the Kodi icon will appear under your ‘recent’ apps section. I believe this has been the case since 5.0.5.1 I believe? I vaguely remember after Amazon blocked FireStarter, they allowed for the Kodi icon to appear where other recent apps do. More on that here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-get-kodi-to-show-up-on-the-home-screen-of-a-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/
2.) I only ask this as this could go one of two ways. When did you buy your FireTV 2 box? Was this one purchased recently or a while ago?
I only ask as new FireTV 2 boxes are coming preloaded with 5.2.1.0, at least from what I have seen (your mileage may vary here). As it currently stands rooting is a prerequisite to installing a custom recovery and subsequently this rbox prerooted image. If you are sitting at 5.2.1.0 or greater, rooting is currently not possible for the FireTV 2 box.
If this is a box you purchases a while ago and are just setting it up now, there stands a chance you are on 5.0.5.1, which can luckily be rooted. I would suggest blocking updates as a first measure if this is the case, then following Elias’ guides on installing a prerooted ROM.
Good luck!
Thanks Nate – its unfortunately a box purchased last week
Its not been updated as yet but I guess im probably out of luck
Sorry to hear that! I will still definitely recommend blocking updates either way on the off chance that the firmware is not updated to 5.2.1.0, or conversely, rbox may come out with a new rooting method for 5.2.1.0 specifically. I would hate to see you miss the boat on a new rooting method if one were to come out soon. There has been a litany of rooting methods coming out as of late (primarily for the first gen boxes, though), so I will hold out hope we will see a method come up soon.
Cool! I’ve just installed it and will check it out. I haven’t actually done anything to take advantage of the rooted status. Does this pre-rooted version break any rooted mods or advantages? what are some of the more popular rooted mods that I should try?
Do we know yet why Amazon stopped the rollout of this version? Did this issue occur on the FireTV2?
Still not positive the rollout was actually stopped. It seemed like it was since nobody was getting it for several days, but in the last 24 hours I’ve heard from several people who got it.
Do i have to block updates again, after installing the new pre rooted rom?
The very last line of the blocking guide “method 1” says the following “Updates will not be re-enabled when installing custom ROMs.”
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/#root
Basically only running a Factory Reset will require you to block updates again.
cdlenfert is correct. you only have to re-block updates if you perform a factory reset. At which point you should use method 5 from my blocking guide to block updates from within TWRP to get past the initial setup update check.
Will the Fire TV 1 be getting the new interface as well?
Yes. The Fire TV 1 and Fire TV Stick 1 will get the new interface too. We just don’t know when exactly.
Question: if you have apps installed would installing this updated rom would you lose the app and settings and have to redownload that stuff?
I’m just curious. I have a fire tv 2 stick so it’s not an option for me but i’m new to Fire TV so just seeking to learn a little. Knowledge is power as they say and maybe in the future i’ll get a Fire TV box.
all your stuff will still be there after the update. its like manually doing an ota
Since I am not living in a country with amazon prime, I am using DNS(ironsocket) to spoof my location to germany.
It worked on the older version on ftv2 and still works on rooted sticks and android phone.
I dont think my set up or the service is to blame, I suspect that there is another FTV 2 internal location check in this fire TV 2 update, that ignores my DNS change and give sme the geo restriction error.
Anybody else experiencing this or has idea where to look for troubleshooting?
did you find a solution for your problem?, i am also using IronSocket DNS services and i halted to update to this firmware after reading your comment
for troubleshooting you can go to ironsocket customer support, they have helped me in the past with other devices
Can we go back to the last rbox update?i can’t stand this one.
Does anyone know the size of the custom icon for the new interface? The existing custom icons on this site are square and don’t exactly fit. :)
I should be more specific and say the existing Kodi custom icons…
Can I download this on my unrooted fire tv 2 (running 5.2.4.0 already but wanting to root)
Any chance getting a prerooted rom for the Fire Tv 1 ?
did you manage to install it on fire tv 2 running factory 5.2.4.0?
Does anyone have xposed working (for kodi with launcher intent) with this ROM? I have v81 and Rbox 1.4 and I don’t know how to tell which is broken.
