Hi now that roku 4 specs are leaked, should i consider this instead of fire tv.How do they compare for 4k performance and gaming

    THANKS

  2. Elias,
This fall looks like streaming player’s dream with the new AFTV 2, AppleTV, roku 4 or the Nvidia shield console. Content is king for streaming with all these devices.
As a cable cutter, which new streaming device could hit the golden a-la-cart subscription model that everyone wants?
Do you think Google is dropping support for the Android TV platform?
    Thanks

  3. Riffmaker says:

Any word on a Time Warner Cable app for FTV? The Roku even has this app. I know it can be side loaded but its a pain to change channels(you need a mouse.)

  4. Nick says:

When is NHL center ice going to arrive on the ftv?

  5. Gilad says:

Hey Elias, do you think we can expect a DirecTV and Bein Sports app’s anytime soon?

  6. Minarp says:

How the heck did you get your @Elias twitter handle? If you bought it, how much?

  7. Adam says:

    Elias,

You mentioned that the new remote will work for the original Fire TV. Since it uses Wifi, will the remote talk to the wifi network that the Fire TV is on, or will the Fire TV create a little dedicated network for the remote like the Roku stick does? Thanks!

  8. Aaron says:

Can you tell us more about the script you used to find the Roku 4 image? It’s interesting and maybe rare for a software engineer to run a blog. Seems like it gives you some advantages over other tech bloggers.

  9. RgnKjnVA says:

Any information on the status of Fling? Haven’t heard anything about new apps or anything since early summer.

  10. Resme says:

    I currently have 1stgen firetv. Should I consider getting a roku 4 or a 2nd Gen firetv?

How much of an improvement is the new firetv vs the old? At the moment I have to restart it daily to keep Netflix from stuttering. Also, native crunchyroll app is very important. I have no idea why crunchyroll is ignoring android TV…. And of course kodi support

  11. Don MacNeil says:

When will the new OS 5 be available for download to the 1st generation Amazon Fire tv for regular users?

  12. Lodewijk (Lewis in english) says:

    Hello Elias,

Hope you are doing fine. We will be watching again live tonight from Belgium. My wife is out so no distractions ;)

    1. The ban of Amazon for Chromecast and apple TV is ridicules. (I think). I use my apple TV with airplay for amazon instant video. So what they claim is not even entirely true. And they could build in support in their app for chromecast (and build an app for the new apple TV). And they will miss the revenue for millions of new Apple TV’s. I think this will backfire. What do you think?
Really started to like Amazon and even took the 67 dollar deal mainly for the Video (thank god for smart DNS) and make my fire TV more useful besides Kodi. Regret it now a bit.

    2. The fire OS5 including alexa is coming 5 October for fire TV 1, correct? This will go all by itself right? or should I do something?

    3. I love Pluto TV on the Fire TV. Do you know of any similar (free)apps on Fire TV looking like old fashion TV?

Take care and keep up the awesome work!
    Lodewijk

  13. Andrew Onorato says:

I have only one question. Will the new fire tv pass (Bitstream) hd codecs (DTS-hd and Dolby true-HD/Atmos) thru HDMI?

  14. Troks says:

What’s next in the evolution of cord cutting? Will we see price drops for HBO, Showtime or CBS?

When are we likely to see Cable companies offer some sort of retention package for Cordcutters? Perhaps broadcast + ESPN + Regional Foxsport or broadcast + nfl / nba.

  15. Stank says:

Like Lodewijk, I too love Pluto TV. I recommend that app to everyone who owns a Fire TV/Stick. In your opinion, what are your must-have Android apps (including both free sideloads and Amazon store) for the AFTV? Thank you for another great week of aftvnews content.

  16. Eddy Gonzalez says:

Can you recommend a USB Stick for Amazon Fire TV (Generation 1).

Amazon should have updated the FIRE TV Stick to include a Micro SD Slot.

Do you have any experience with OTA Tuners such as HDHomeRun EXTEND or TabloTV? Any suggestions on which one provides better quality and experience?

    • Dan says:

I have experience with HD Homerun OTA and cable card. You must use the FTV box and not the stick. The product works well if you don’t use the HD Homerun view app and instead use Kodi addon or InstaTV pro (which is a little better).

The 1080i (NBC, PBS and CBS) channels, which are interlaced, Do not play flawlessly. There’s a little shutter. I am hoping the new FireTV resolves that.

Another issue is wifi is not enough bandwidth. I recommend Ethernet or MoCA.

  17. Dan says:

Do you think the ban will will extend to Chinese android boxes? I assume they can access amazon instant video, since they are using the phone/tablet version of android.

  18. Wejgomi says:

    Hi,

What are your thoughts about the useability/performance of Fire OS 5. Especially for Fire Stick TV users, having gimmicks as Alexa is cool, but won’t come without a hog on already low memory. And it is the lollipop inside, which killed the mighty Nexus 7 after all.

    Regards

  19. Jim says:

feedback only: you really need to do this on Twitch with a live, more interactive discussion thread.
