I’ll be live streaming this week’s episode of the AFTVnewscast, at this link here, tomorrow at 1:30pm PT, as I do every Friday. Post your questions or topics in the comments below for me to answer and discuss during the episode. Anything goes for questions, whether it’s about the Fire TV, AFTVnews, or tech in general. Let’s hear them! Even if you can’t watch live, ask your question now and catch the episode on YouTube later.
Do you have any insider info on an Amazon Video app update for the Xbox One S that will do UHD HDR streaming? The system shipped with the same existing app as before.
I’m hoping you can answer this question since I know you’re an honest blogger. As a website owner, what is the legality of accepting donations? More specific, do I have to file any paperwork or can I just start now. Do I have to file taxes for the donations received? I’m in the US. This is probably random but I don’t know who else to ask.
Hi Elias.
Many of us received the $10 Amazon promotion after getting Hay Day. Does the $10 expire on the same day for everyone or is it 30days from time each of us received the email about the $10.
Hi. I was on vacation recently and tried to use my fire tv 2 offline. unfortunately almost every app didnt start with an -amazon app store unknown error- including es file explorer, mrmc and almost every game. is there any way to fix this?
Not so much a question as an update. Last week I asked if anyone else was experiencing the FTV failing to wake up after going to sleep. Found the culprit. I had the FTV, my Roku 4, and my ethernet switch all too close together in a cramped space, and it was overheating! I spread those components farther apart Saturday, and haven’t had an issue since.
Another update on a question I asked two weeks ago, lipsync issues on Playstation Vue… according to avsforum.com, it’s a widespread issue since Vue’s last FTV software update. PS Vue runs fine and dandy on the Roku 4. I like the FTV user interface for Vue much better than Roku’s, but until Sony fixes the lipsync issue (most likely with another software update), Vue on the FTV is unusable.
I actually found the latest Playstation Vue update to be more stable plus 60fps looks better. I am using a 1st Gen AFTV with the latest OS update. I sure you tried the usual repairs like deleting the app and reinstallin it. If you haven’t yet, talk to tech support to notify them of the issue. It may not fix your problem but it will sent to the development team of the issues you are experiencing.
Yeah, I’ve tried the latest update (dated 8/11). But when I saw it didn’t fix the lip sync issue, I didn’t bother with it anymore. I’m just going to do my Vue watching on the Roku til Sony fixes it. I hate the Roku’s interface (vastly different from FTV’s Vue interface, with no channel guide), but no sync issue whatsoever.
In fact, somebody on the Vue forums at avsforum was complaining about the Roku version needing to be updated. I really need to tell them to be careful what they wish for!
First question – is there is anyway to get Skype to Work on the Fire TV?
Second question -is there an app to change the default rotation per app basis that works on the latest version of the fire tv 1 ( the current one that I’m using is a all or nothing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2331514 ), it works fine for most apps but for some apps like Vudu & Max Go ( the cinemax app) it makes them unusable.
thanks and awesome website
also just a disclaimer that Ultimate Rotation Control doesnt work as it ask to go to a second screen and its not visible in the fire tv 1
Hi Elias,
Back again after two weeks absence (I listen and watch everything back of course).
Sorry I missed the 50th episode. Congrats! I believe I have seen at least 30 live including the first one. Did the survey too. And it has improved over time, better mic ;) and your insight has always been fantastic!
1. I set up my fire TV stick I got on prime day and I am quite impressed. Not as slow and not as much lag as I expected. Even for Kodi. So an excellent expansion in the bedroom in addition apple TV3. Is it possible that the stick will work slower if connected to a USB on my TV with maybe not enough power compared to connected with the actual plug?
2. I loved your insight on HDR the last weeks. Cannot wait for this technology in my house. I see that a 65 OLED from LG with very good specs is around 2500-3000 dollars these days. Still a bit too steep but it’s getting there. What would be the price point for you to get one? I will wait until it’s 1500. The next AFTV will support HDR10 I think. Do you think they will put a Dolby vision chip in it as well? I believe they should because that will have more possibilities than HDR10. What do you think? But maybe it’s too expensive to put this chip for a 100 dollar box compared to a 2500 dollar TV.
3. I still don’t get why people use plex compared to Kodi. You need to decode already on the server whereas kodi does the decoding itself. You need always a computer running or a decoding capable NAS. I have a relatively simple NAS and stream now in my bedroom and living room with kodi. I can also stream outside my house via the cloud options on my NAS. What are benefits of PLEX compared to this?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any way to get surround 5.1 out of the fire TV , instead of surround lpcm?
Can I ask a question about vpn. I subscribe to PIA Vpn and wish to know is there any way to load this on AFTV 1.
MANY THANKS
I would run the Fire TV through your router and install OpenVPN or what ever PIA uses directly onto the router itself.
Hey Elias great simulcast thanks for everything you do as well as rbox and the xdateam big ups to you guys! My question is if I load the prerooted rom version 5.2.1.0 to the FireTV will I still be able to enable FiredTV launcher and or FireStopper via the adb shell command or is there a patch on this latest version to prevent those apps from working due to the blacklist? Thanks
I was wondering if it would be worth purchasing an Amazon Alexa remote off eBay since Amazon has been sold out for a very long time. Or is there any possibility that the Alexa app on Android and Apple will get voice integration in the next couple of months like the FireTV app. Or am I stuck using the Roger app on my phone.
Elias,
Thanks for the podcasts as usual. I also took your survey. I caught the podcast live once (at work on the east coast) but have been with you since day one. Always audio on my hour commute.
I have the fire TV stick (19.95 early buyer! Best investment) but also encounter overheating. After two years, mine only overheats when playing “Casino World Championship”: https://www.amazon.com/zinny-world-championship/dp/B012FUFS4K
And even more specifically since a spring/summer update.
I’ve been playing it since your free apps of the week in Aug 2015.
I’ve popped the stick open to remove the insulation pads that I read were the source. I found pics here: https://www.exploitee.rs/index.php/amazon_fire_tv_stick%E2%80%8B
I’ve also seen heat syncs but haven’t gone there yet:

So my question to you & your followers is what next? Should I spend $2.50 at radio shack on a heat sync? Is my $2 million of fake Texas Hold ’em money really worth the time? Should I switch to a different app based on comments here?
My stick is non-rooted, powered by the Amazon power supply and on the hdmi extender.
Awesome job! Bring on the forum!

I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem side-loading apps on their Fire TVs? Tried to load SyFy and CW. Did not work.
Sideload with ES Explorer, FTP the app from your phone to the Fire device using the Remote option in ES Explorer. Or use a FTP app from your PC/Laptop or Mac. Then use a File manager to install it.
Hello Elias, thanks for the work you have put into this site. Any news on TV Tuner Support for Fire TV? You mentioned driver support was present on the devices latest firmware, any idea if they are partnering up with anyone?
From your experience using the Fire TV Stick is the voice search slow? I tried a Fire TV Stick the other day and when performing a voice search there see to be a large delay in the response.
