I’ll be live streaming this week’s episode of the AFTVnewscast, at this link here, tomorrow at 1:30pm PT, as I do every Friday. Post your questions or topics in the comments below for me to answer and discuss during the episode. Anything goes for questions, whether it’s about the Fire TV, AFTVnews, or tech in general. Let’s hear them! Even if you can’t watch live, ask your question now and catch the episode on YouTube later.

  1. Masterblaster says:

Have you tried the Playstation Vue app? I have been really enjoying NHL, the dvr functionality and added channels that Sling doesn’t offer. Down side there isn’t Dolby surround just stereo.
What subscription services do you use?

What do you think of the other tv services planned from Google, Amazon, Apple?

    Thanks for your hard work!

  2. Roy says:

I know your site is a Amazon Fire TV site. My question is do you own any Roku devices? Have you ever?
I use to have 3 Roku 3’s but when one of my TV’s broke I purchased a 4K TV and wanted a 4K capable player. I then sold one of the Roku’s for 70 bucks and purchased the Fire TV on sale for 85. I really liked the speed and SD expand-ability. I later sold another Roku 3 to a friend for 70 bucks and purchased another Fire TV 2 for 75 this time during the last promotion. While I do have a Roku 3 in the house I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to. Sure it has thousands of channels but I use maybe 10. The 2 go to channels (Hulu and Netflix) are on the Fire TV. I can’t complain about the cost as it only cost me 25 plus tax to upgrade from the Roku 3’s that I had owned for 12 months or so.

  3. ActionA says:

Are we any closer to getting custom recovery and builds for FireTV gen1 and FireTV sticks?

  4. What’s the best way to backup and restore a fully rooted and tweaked 5.0.5/3.0.0-5 image a FireTV 2 to another FireTV 2? TWRP gets messy and has issues restoring.

I’ve tried to make a custom install image to install in TWRP with 5.0.5 rooted base image and 3.0.0-5 TWRP but it complains about a corrupted zip when it’s not. What am I doing wrong? Did Rbox ever update his images?

  5. Es File Explorer crashes when I transfer kodi files from my laptop to my firestick when using the remote manager option of es file explorer.

Eventually it takes all the files after the 2nd or 3rd trial.

Is this happening to anyone else?

  6. luthersman says:

has the aftv interface stalled? i got tired of the launcher specially when the banner ad showed up and started advertising shows I didn’t like or ever want to watch. I love what this little box can do and have been a big fan from the day it came out, but I am tired of amazons heavy hand. My first gen aftv still runs firestarter which is great but Amazon is trying to stop even this sideloaded aproach.

so last month I bought the Apple tv 4. and have been happy. I can arrange apps how I like, even into folders. It has better search functions and even has a app store.

    what does everyone else think?

    • Roy says:

Personally I love the Apple TV and fire that up first then the Amazon Fire 2 when I want to watch Amazon Video or Sling TV. Do wish the Fire TV was more customizable though.

  7. Jim says:

Hey Big E, hope you are doing well. Anyways now that I am rooted and blocking updates after using kingroot but if I give the rooted ftv2 to a friend who ofcourse has a different newtwork so will it update if connected to his network? Or will the ftv2 stay rooted and will not update?

Love you to death Big E!

    • Jim says:

Also my 2nd question is since I rooted my ftv2 and blocking updates within my ftv2 and since my asus router can not block https so is open dns the only way to block updates? Since I already blocked updates internally I dont see why I need to hassle with costly 3rd party open dns stuff.

3rd question… What is the easiest way to install the Google Play store on my rooted ftv2? So after I install the Google play store then if I install the apps then they will always be there right?

      Love you again Big E!!!!

      • Jim says:

One last question… I have an old trackR device so will this integrate will Amazon’s Alexa? Its the round plastic one.

  8. IrishBiker says:

I have a rooted FTV2 and I am trying to install a working VPN, Has anyone got one to work?

    • mattgyver83 says:

I sideloaded the latest beta version of OpenVPN (adds whitelisting) on mine and use allow only the Kodi app to go out my PIA VPN. This can obviously support any other VPN that supports or uses OpenVPN.

  9. Nigel says:

Trying to install Grand Theft Auto on to my Fire TV2 but it complains that there is not enough space. I have a large SD card mounted on the box which has over 20GB of free space but I cannot get the game to use it.

    Any Ideas?

  10. Joe Blanco says:

Whats the future for Kodi on the FireTV and is MRMC going to have any useful addons installed for TV shows and movies that are not piracy intended?

  11. Joe Blanco says:

Is MrMC going to have any usefull addons for latest tv shows or movies that are not conspired pirated in any form?

  12. gdroid666 says:

how do i make the screensaver on the fire stick work?
i have it set to amazon image collection and 5 minutes
every thing seems to be set right but the screen saver never comes on
i have left it idle on both the home screen and within an app but the screen saver just does not work no matter what i do
sometimes the screen will just go black but after a longer time than the 5 minutes the screen saver is set for, but it never plays the slide show pics it sown in the screensaver settings under amazon image collection
i am on 5.0.5 blocked updates and installed firestarter

  13. James says:

Is there any news on how soon the sideclicks will be back in stock on Amazon?

  14. I’m using Koying’s SPMC fork of Kodi on my Gen1 and it works great. Koying states his focus is moslty geared towards the Nvidia Shield as it has basically “cornered the Market” for Android based TV devices.
Do you use the Shield and what sets it apart from the FireTV?

  15. Robbie says:

How to install OpenVPN on Fire TV (Not rooted)? Thank you!

  16. Josh says:

“The 1st-gen Fire TV can be rooted, using an app called KingRoot, if it is running software version 5.0.0 thru 5.0.5. Custom recovery and pre-rooted ROMs that are compatible with KingRoot rooted devices are currently in the works and will be released soon. Until those become available, it is recommended that you block software updates to ensure your Fire TV remains on a rootable software version and wait for custom recovery to be released. Once the pre-rooted ROMs and custom recovery are released, I will write a guide for rooting the Fire TV running 5.0.0 to 5.0.5 and update this page. It is important to block updates because Fire TV software version and up block the KingRoot rooting method.”

is there any news on these? they have been “in the works” for a while and we have had no updates? Maybe a link to the XDA forums where Rbox is working on them. I dont want to shell out for a Fire TV box…

  17. erbie says:
