I’ll be live streaming this week’s episode of the AFTVnewscast tomorrow at 1:30pm PT, as I do every Friday. Post your questions or topics in the comments below for me to answer and discuss during the episode. Anything goes for questions, whether it’s about the Fire TV, rooting, AFTVnews, or tech in general. Let’s hear them! Even if you can’t watch live, ask your question now and catch the episode on YouTube later.
Where do they get the wallpapers for the Fire TV when it is idle?
I had three questions:
1)
I think the FireTV and other TV-Android devices could be very usefull for giving Skype and Hangout a new touch of life!
But no Skype apk bring my M$ HD Webcam to run with it. Also not the mod-version from theos0o.
Chat and basic functions work. Can you tell me why Skype-Apk can not access my Webcam?
I had a rooted FireTV box 1 and the app SnapEXWebcam can show me full-video by changing a permission on /dev/video1.
2)
How can I enable the full Xiaomi BT Gamepad functions is Fire-OS5. I am talkng also about the rumble and perhaps the G-Sensor. I asked this question here too and I am not alone: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-gains-additional-3rd-party-game-controller-support-heres-the-full-list/
3)
Why is there still no crowdfundig-project to create a full working Cyanogen-Mod-TV (12?) system or another great mod?
Greetings by Daniel
I am still waiting for rooting guide for the Fire TV 1 :/
when can we expect the release?
> when can we expect the release?
As a software developer myself, these words make my skin crawl. Can’t imagine what it must be like getting asked this constantly when you are one person doing it in your free time.
So much of the benefit of being rooted hinges on rbox’s work and charity. A little gratitude and patience seems like the bare minimum rooters should give him.
What is the latest update on rbox getting rooted 1st generation Fire Tvs working with the latest pre-rooted Fire OS 5? When can we update?
You should stalk him on XDA like I do, just don’t nag him for ETAs. :)
If I root my Fire TV can I make it not go to sleep? Or better just keep the screen saver running all the time?
So far that is the only reason I’ve needed to root my devices.
My family still thinks something is wrong when the source is on the Fire TV and it’s blank. They are use to seeing a DVR or Roku Screensaver.
HeyRadar, I don’t own the Fire TV yet but I have read that if you turn the TV off the Fire TV will automatically go to sleep, is this true? I would like to be able to stream audio to my stereo receiver, possibly via HDMI, and turn the TV off.
Your effective is hiding root from installed applications?
How* effective is hiding root from installed applications?
The Fire OS 5.0.5 update will bring a great option. One that RBox has mention before…
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65585708&postcount=567
Should be as easy as removing SuperSU from the PreRooted Rom on FW 5.0.5 or newer (future roms).
How do you decide which questions to answer and which ones to ignore?
I bet he’ll ignore this question.
How can I launch kodi from the home screen on 1st Gen os5 ?
Thanks for the hard work and patience.
Scroll down on the side menu to Apps.
Once you’ve rooted the fire tv can you restore back to stock just like new from apple? I know with an iphone when you jailbreak it you can just restore it in itunes and the file system is restored.
Thanks for kicking butt Elias!
How bad is kingroot ? thanks my only question…
On last week’s show, there was a question about finding out what videos are about to expire from Prime Videos. After a bit of research, I found a site that has a list that appears to be crowd sourced: What’s on Prime Now at http://whatsonprimenow.blogspot.com/p/whats-expiring.html
Also, if you go to the Your Watchlist page on the Amazon Videos website, any videos set to expire within a month will have a note under the video’s poster that it “Leaves Prime in XX days.” I believe this is only on the full website, not mobile.
1. You reported a while back that with the new OS, once you install sideloaded apps like Kodi they show up in recent. I have not been able to make that happen. Any idea what I need to do to make them show up on Recent?
2. Any idea when the updated ROM for OS 5.05 will be available for the FireTV (1st Gen)?
Disable “SLEEP”!!!!! Without rooting the 2nd gen.FireTV.
Hi Elias,
I hope all is well.
I cannot get WEMO working via alexa on my fire TV (as you know). You suspect the router. If I would have an echo I would have the same problem I suppose. As far as I could figure out echo and AFTV should support all the same home smart devices.
I love my new Amazon tablet and it’s integration with amazon prime video. The off-line viewing is a serious killer feature of amazon prime video. What would stop Netflix or HBO from doing this? I find it so nice when traveling.
Netflix has blocked my VPN and smart DNS. Do you think it is possible for these VPN/DNS providers to work with a dynamic proxy in order to have a new IP address every day and staying ahead of Netflix?
Thanks and kind regards,
Lodewijk
Hi Lodewijk,
After successfully using for more than two years the “Unblock-US” service (https://www.unblock-us.com), now Netflix also has blocked my VPN, and Unfortunately “Unblock-US” has not fixed this access problem.
Do you know any other way to fix this problem?
Someone here knows of any other DNS services that still works with Netflix?
Hi,
Getflix works, they made some works to fix it unfortunately it does not work on all devices but luckily works on fire tv :)
The latest computerless root tutorial is a masterpiece! Now how about a way to disable updates directly on the fire tv. Is there a terminal program we can install directly to do this?
Hi Elias,
No question today, just wanted to let you know about the Rii Mini Bluetooth keyboard we talked about last week.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017QZ483G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is approximately 3 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in. with a stainless steel back. On the back is a smaller encased area that houses the on/off, charging port and bluetooth connect button, which is approximately 1 in. x 8 5/8 in. It is very helpful with gripping the keyboard in one hand securely.
Qwerty keyboard is set up nicely with several quick keys, including home,back,ff,play/pause,mute,volume up/down etc. The mouse works great which is not always the case with mini keyboards.
It has an auto sleep that kicks in after 3 minutes that can be awakened with any key. I found this misleading the first time it happened because on screen is says “disconnected” I think this could be re-worded.
For under $30 it’s a nice addition over the fire stick remote.
I did recently see a few posts about Air Mouse remotes that I now would like to try. Always new toys to play with. :)
Have a great weekend!
Lori
If I am not mistaken, you’ve had the Amazon Echo now for quite a while. Do you like it as much as you did in the beginning? What can you tell us about the device for those of us who still don’t own one? How many stars would you give it?
1. Are there updated adb commands or a windows batch file to take screenshots on Fire OS 5.0.5 ? The two FTV apps screen capture do not seem to work on the latest FW.
Working on doing a walk thru for some friends I might post @ XDA & would like to include pictures…
2. For us 1st Gen rooted unlocked bootloader owners. It seems we are stuck waiting on a All-In-One option that includes the locked bootloader 1st Gen FTV(S).
Any update on how the AIO is coming a long. Although from earlier updates it seems the Rom & TWRP are ready for unlocked bootloader FTV’s ?
Have you tried the sony VUE on the fire TV?
Hello Elias,
I am watching live, and would like again to thank you for all your selfless help and excellent site for FireTV!
I am using a 64GB Micro SDCard on my new FireTV2 with FireOS-5, so I also have decided to move almost all my APPs to the Micro-SD Card, however if I connect any USB 3.0 Flash Drive, the FireTV2 always act very weird and it gets very confused when trying to recognize both type of memory: MicroSD-Cards and USB Flash Drives.
I also have noticed that if I connect both, a MicroSD-Card and a USB Flash Drive, the APPs icons disappears from the “Firestarter” Screen!
The problem is so annoying, that I always have to reset my FireTV2 to get it working again.
Do you have noticed this strange behaviour and know how to fix it?
Do you think that is better to only use one MicroSD-Card (64 or 128), to avoid all this access problems?
Thanks again Elias for always help with all our requests!!
