I’ll be live streaming another episode of the AFTVnewscast tomorrow at 1:30pm PT, as I do every Friday. Post your questions or topics in the comments below for me to answer and discuss during the episode. Anything goes for questions, whether it’s about the Fire TV, AFTVnews, or tech in general. Hello
I have 2 fire tv sticks on old firmware and 1 with voice remote running the latest firmware.
I am in the UK and my older sticks have not received the OTA update yet.
My question is my voice remote stick seems so much slower than my older sticks and also suffers from getting hot. The performance is very degraded compared to my older sticks moving through the menus and settings is sluggish at times.
If my older sticks upgrade to this new firmware will they also become sluggish as to be honest I would rather stay on the older firmware than have my sticks upgrade and be like my new stick.
What are your thought?
What do you think of Alexa?
Did you like the Superbowl commercials?
What do you think will be the next BIG thing?
I always enjoy your insight.
Thanks
Also I have noticed on my voice remote stick on the latest firmware if I have parental controls enabled and try to go into settings that require the code. Once the code is entered nothing happens and I have to enter this 2 – 3 times before I will be allowed into the setting. Have you notice this?
Hi, is ssh access possible without rooting FTV? What user & pass do I use?
And finally are there known commands for instance restart FTV?
Do you know what time Amazon pushes out updates. Does checking every hour make a difference?
Has RBox received the link to the 1st Gen FireOS 5.0.5 update yet. If not can you post a guide/link on how to monitor ones internet traffic to get the link for RBox so the lucky early upgraders can help out get the Rom to RBox… Wish I would had asked this ? last week to shorten the amount to of wait time…
Will rooting allow me to install Chromecast app from playstore and use my AFTV like a Chromecast? How compatible are apps on playstore with the AFTV2?
My question is similar. Should I root if my only reason is to gain google services? Are there any other practical reasons to root?
Any word on when Amazon will start officially selling AFTV or stick in Canada or other regions? I absolutely love my AFTV but I had to pick one up in Buffalo across the border. I imagine they would need to release Prime Video up here first and I know some other companies show Prime Video content via their streaming service in Canada. Would be great if maybe Amazon would co-brand a box for Canadian market.
Also, any word about Amazon cracking down on VPN/DNS services like Netflix does when it comes to their video services?
Hi will the new voice remote work with a 1st gen ftv once it’s on the new firmware? I have one that came when I bought a stick last month.
Yes. FireOS 5.0.5 on both the 1st & 2nd Gen make all the official remotes work fully….
Will the latest updated Gen 1 remote work on all Fire OS versions? Wondered if there were any incompatibilities that went along with the remote updates.
Thanks.
any update on installing playstore on aftv2?
There are several Android TV apps that don’t exist on the Fire TV. Is there a way to specifically side load Android TV apps? I would think they would work better than mobile apps, since they are designed for remotes.
Any news on the first gen Firestick update to the new firmware? And will it allow me to connect blutooth headphones when it’s updated?
Yes the new firmware does add Bluetooth audio. There is a Bluetooth settings Apk that can be installed to connect Bluetooth mice and keyboards that may enable you to do this on the older one. I used it to connect an apple Magic Mouse to my old fire stick for using android apps that needed a mouse
Hi Elias,
I hope you are doing OK.
What do you think will happen when I get the Fire OS5 for AFTV1 update and I start to ask questions to Alexa involving my location. I have a US amazon account but are using the device in Belgium. For amazon prime video I use a DNS but this won’t do anything for Alexa I think.
Will alexa refer to the address in my amazon account? or check where I actually am? Will I get an error then if I ask about the weather for example?
I guess for news and controlling my smart home devices it should work fine. Is that correct?
Thanks and have a great weekend

I own an Amazon Fire Phone and really like it. Do you think that Amazon will return to the phone business and offer us a second generation Fire Phone? (I know that there lots of other people like myself who really appreciate the phone.)
In reverse of the pre-update-blocked rom factory reset conflict, what would the commands look like to disable the updates while still in TWRP recovery?
