I’ll be live streaming another episode of the AFTVnewscast tomorrow at 1:30pm PT, as I do every Friday. Post your questions or topics in the comments below for me to answer and discuss during the episode. Anything goes for questions, whether it’s about the Fire TV, AFTVnews, or tech in general. Even if you can’t watch live, ask your question now and catch the episode on YouTube later.
I know it’s been covered before, but I kinda hace a 3 part question:
1. Is the Xiaomi Gamepad fully compatible via bluetooth with the 1st Gen FTV??
2. Once the rooted FTV 5.0 firmware is released, will it still be safe to do a factory reset without loosing root (with Amazon update servers blocked on my router)? As it updates the Android Version, I figure it would be a good time to do a Factory Reset and have a clean system, like on phones/tablets.
3. If I place a microSD reader in the USB of my FTV with a 16/32GB microSD card (class 10 or HSD), would it serve and work well as external storage with FTV Firmware 5.0??
Hope you have time and a chance to answer my queries.
Thanks for all you do for the FTV community
I would like to add to the 2nd ?…
I want to clean as much of my rooted 1st Gen FTV’s as possible either before or after the FireOS 5 update. So I am hopping Elias includes a very thorough option of wiping as much as possible in his upgrade guide.
“wipe data/factory reset”
“wipe cache partition”
“wipe dalvik cache”
Not sure what other options the new TWRP Custom Recovery might include on top of the 3 above.
Guess my ? for Elias is are you planning on including a section in your update/upgrade to FireOS 5 guide about wiping as much of the FireOS 3 & previously installed apps gunk of our FireTV’s ???
I had posted this ? here: http://www.aftvnews.com/twrp-custom-recovery-in-the-works-for-rooted-fire-tv-2/#comment-197944
Will it be possible to watch the Stupor Bowl somehow on the FireTV? Our antenna reception of CBS is terrible.
Using the app Kodi & the right addons (channels) yes you can
Might be better as a tutorial rather than a topic during tomorrow’s Newscast, but could you shed some light on how to set up a VPN on the Fire TV (box and stick)?
For VPN the best results seems to be with Fire OS 5.

That should be the most compatible tutorial out there.
Thank Y314K. Yet another reason to anticipate OS 5. :)
I have recently the new 4k fire tv and i am quite happy with it. However i am having couple of problems with it.
1:
I have been having issues with the new Fire TV remote stops working from time to time. Sometimes pulling a battery out and putting it back can fix it, sometimes having to pull the power to the box to get it to work.
do you know any solution to this? I got it from tesco(UK) and not sure if I should call them or if I can go directly to Amazon support for a solution or replacement.
2:
I have installed an app that requires a remote mouse app to control it. I have tried wukong remote and remote mouse for fire tv, but i have no luck making either of them work. sometimes the mouse pointer appears on the tv and i can move it but it doesn’t work when i click on anything.
I also have firestarter installed. does that has something to do with no remout mouse apps working?
Any help would be appreciated.
Ether get yourself a keyboard (k400 & k400 plus work great) & have a touch mouse pad or get mouse toggle for fire tv the latest version works (1.0.3).
For your 2nd problem there is a great solution. This is an app that converts your FireTV or FireTV Stick remote into a mouse by just clicking the play button twice & once to go back to regular mode. It’s available thru the PlayStore & Apple iTunes. I’ve used it with Viki & ATT app. It’s just about perfect.

For .1. I had a similar prob but as I put in an asus ac wifi router problem solved. Before my asus router i had disconnected wifi at times and that causes the ftv2 remote to disconect (i believe it is a wifi remote). So give that a try.
Wukong remote works fine for me on the Fire TV 2 but I am rooted so that might be why. I remember it asked for root permission at some point during setup. Workes fine on the Fire TV stick without root too though.
You can also plugin a computer mouse (wired or wireless). I am using a Logitech wireless mouse and it works really well.
What’s the difference between a Proxy, SmartDNS, and a VPN pertaining to Netflix location blocking?
A bit off topic but are you able to use your contacts to find out if/ when the Amazon app is coming to Apple TV?
Good question but luckily i have both lol.
Same here! I really like both, would really like to see Amazon on the Apple TV soon though.
I have a question about maintenance.
On kodi do i have to do maintennace like clearing the cache as well as other things? If so please guide me. And same for the ftv2.
Will there be a new root for newer fw for the 1. gen?
i am now waiting for about a year for a new root for the firsf gen
Any news when/if the AFTV2 will be able to better handle the SD card like moving all/most parts of an application to the SD? This is my biggest pain, e.g. since the last updates Asphalt 8 and GTA3 are not fitting into the in-built storage together anymore…
Yes! Fire TV 2 is great for movies but the crippled memory makes it near useless as a gaming device. Having to uninstall reinstall to switch between large games is a major pain!
Kodi stopped working on Fire Tv stick, earlier edition, via Ikono TV. It only shows German word LADEN, and nothing appears. Any idea what append.
Laden = loading
So something with your installation or data is wrong
Unless somebody has a better idea I’m afraid you will have to run a fresh Installation..
If there were one thing that you could change on the Fire TV Box 2nd Generation, what would it be?
Hello Elias,
I hope you are doing fine.
Today’s question:
How will I notice my fire TV will have updated to OS5? Will I notice anything? get a notification? (besides some news on AFTVnews of course).
All my setting and sideloaded apps will stay there?
Firestarter will be still there too?
Besides the obvious Kodi & Netflix, what are your personal favourit apps on the fire TV
Thank and have a great weekend!
With side loading APKs that are made for tablet and smartphone interfaces. The Firetv remote does not work so well/at all. I have tested Wukong remote for that. It works but is very clumsy to switch around the proper interface control. Do you have any other recommendations on what I can do to get better input on a side loaded app made for a tablet?
Repost from earlier ?

Since I am new to streaming I have a question regarding what type of Fire TV device I should purchase. I only stream movies or live content such as ESPN and DO NOT play online games. My router is located less than 50 feet away from my TV, which is located in another room. My walls are not drywall, but wood paneling, since I live in a mobile home. Would you recommend the $49.99 Fire TV Stick or the $99.99 Fire TV player? I look forward to your answer.
Will Fire TV Platform ever release support for browsers (Amazon Silk Browser, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox)?
Is it possible to remap 3rd party controllers so that work exactly like the stock controller? Perhaps fooling android into thinking they are the same device (HID)?
I have issues with games like crossy road and terraria using 3rd party controllers. My FTV is rooted, so I would think that you could remap the buttons, but I haven’t seen any good guides to do this…
I run Kodio on the Fire TV 2. Using your guide I moved all the data to the SD card and created the xbmc_env.properties file. When I start Kodi everything loads fine but when I then switch to another app and open Kodi again Kodi starts up without any of my settings (no addons, default skin etc.). So it appears that it does not load the data from the SD card. To get my settings back I then need to exit Kodi (using the Exit button in Kodi) and start it again . So basically every second time I open Kodi it does not load my settings from the SD card. Any idea what could be going on here?
I have another question to ask.
If I want to root a ftv2 then I know I have to update my ftv2 to the latest software but what if I want to give this to my friend and have them root it instead of me doing it. Should I update to latest version now ans block updates to the ftv2 or just update ONLY since I am giving it to them so they can block the update on their end.
Thanks
Hi Elias,
I just wanted to make sure one more time. So you do recommend the Fire TV Stick if all I want to do is stream and archive video to my non 4k HDTV right? Thanks!!
