Fire OS 5.0 has broken usb connections, broken Amazon services, and forces reboot / reinstall of Fire OS 5.0.
What have you personally experienced with OS 5.0?

    1. I am curious about getting this app on the FireTV without upgrading to 5.0
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv

    2. since 5.0 break firestarter i am also curious about hwo to prevent the forced update once it becomes released as stable

    thanks

What would recommend as the best game controller for the Fire TV? I have an Ouya controller that works okay. I’m considering the wireless Xbox 360 controller with adapter. Should I go that route, the official controller, or something different?

If it helps, I’ll be using it for emulation mostly. Thanks!

    • Mike says:

I use the moga pro controller paired in “b” mode. I prefer it over the amazon controller but it has one funky problem. In the gamefly streaming app it registers the joystick buttons at the triggers. Other than that it’s much more comfortable and a better build quality over the amazon controller.

Sideloading purchased copies (through the Amazon store) of the first 3 Five Nights At Freddy’s games used to work fine using a mouse. A few updates ago, the games start up fine but crash as soon as the mouse is moved. No other application run on the Fire TV exhibits this problem.

    Really enjoying the site!

Appreciate that your site is US focused but would love some UK info, like possible release of the ECHO here…..we’re still waiting for it!!!!

    Cheers

Why isn’t Vudu on Fire TV? Vudu is on pretty much everything, including cheap blu ray players so I’m thinking it’s Amazon blocking not Vudus lack of development which is pretty crappy of Amazon if that’s the case. On the other hand Vudu can release an Fire TV app similar to the IOS app where users can have access to their UV collections for streaming. I asked Vudu about this with no reply I also asked if they could add Fling support to the mobile apps again with no reply.

I tried Flixster which has most of collection but only streams SD. I heard Amazon is blocking the HD feed, do you know if that’s true?

Thanks for your input as I’m seriously considering dropping Amazon all together for lack of any UV support which is pretty much the industry standard.

    • Bruce Walker says:

I would also like to see a VUDU app for Fire TV (w/ HDX support of course). I think the reason we haven’t seen one is VUDU’s close ties to Walmart. Maybe Elias knows more about this. I will tune in today to find out.

  7. Mike says:

The Fire TV as of late has had a lack of quality games. Will this Fire OS 5 allow android tv games to be played on the fire tv? Games like real boxing, trine, etc?

  8. Milky1 says:

Hey, excellent site, check it daily! I’m in Ireland with 2 Fire TVs and an Echo. All working great with a Samrt DNS.

I’m assuming Fire TV2 will be support 4K?
Any sign of HBO, Showtime etc releasing 4k apps?

    Hi Elias,

    I have 2 questions:

Do you think the new Fire TV will have the option to sideload? And how do you see the future of sideloading. Do you think that this option will stay available on the fire TV in the future? Some sideload apps compete with prime video or can be used to pirate (like they claim for Kodi). Why would sideloading stay available/become unavailable? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Should I update my Kodi from 14.2 to 15.0? What would be the benefit of updating and what would be the drawback? How can I update Kodi with keeping all my settings and add on’s?

  10. Paul says:

The original Fire TV box appears to have vanished from Amazon’s site. Right not all you can buy is a refurbished model. The Fire TV Stick is still available.
Could this point to the imminent release of a new Fire TV model? Or perhaps the rumored beefier Fire TV Stick?

  11. Rick Matthews says:

I noticed looking at the Benchmarks from the mystery Fire Device in July that it is using a PowerVR 6250 GPU. Would not this be more indicative of the Hardware being used on the Fire TV stick rather than Fire TV?

  12. Mike says:

Amazon purchased some developers and has their own inhouse developers to make software for amazon. Since sev-zero I have heard nothing of these software developers and what they are working on. Any rumors or news on big games releasing for the fire tv?

  13. Barusch Benitez says:

About Fire OS 5.0 update. Did you use Kodi under 5.0? Is everything running normal there? I mainly use my Fire TV as a Kodi machine, so this is very important to me.

  14. Charles says:

I’m very interested in when Amazon is going to make their strategy with the Fire TV box known. I’m really in the market for a new streaming box in the next couple of weeks, but I don’t want to try and find a current Fire TV (they seem to still be available at Best Buy) if they’re going to update to a better model soon. Of course on the other hand I don’t want to wait around for another month or so waiting to see what Amazon has in mind. I have a Fire Stick for the bedroom TV and like it allot (aside from the HBO Go and Starz lip synch issues). But I need something for the main TV and since I have an ethernet connection available I want something that can take advantage of that. Amazon’s current “Available later/Not sure if it will be available” website dance is starting to annoy me a bit. I suppose they could be waiting to see what Apple will do with their new box in a few weeks and I imagine that the Roku 4 will eventually be introduced. But I’ve still got my heart set on a next generation Fire TV box and wish Amazon would make an announcement (or something would leak to a blogger like you ;))

Hi Elias, I am really enjoying your Excellent information site for FireTV!!

I have been searching, without any success, for some information about the Fire TV BOX “Front LED”.

I have noticed that this “Front LED”, sometimes without any reason, it gets white, orange and also intermittent!…

Please, I would like to know what’s the meaning of these 4 different colors and stages:

    Solid-White.
    Solid-Orange.
    Intermittent-White. Intermittent-Orange.

Concerning the NEW FireOS-5, I would like like to know if anyone has already tried to install on the FireTV, the Android-TV Leanback launcher, or any other APP compatible only with Android-TV?

I also would like to know, how is the FireOS-5 gonna make the FireTV better?…

Any major changes, apart from being based on Android 5.1?

1000 Thanks for your excellent FireTV Site and for all your help!!!

Just an update for your episode…it looks like HBO Now needs more than just the rbox firmware for rooted users. It also requires that you hide root:

  17. Daniel says:

I am rooted on latest firmware, my question is if I can downgrade. Thank you

  18. Andy says:

Is there any reason to some people being able to pair sony DS4 controllers with the firetv and others cannot? I am one of the people who cannot get it to pair no matter what I try. Is there different controller versions?

  19. Dan says:

Evening Elias, are you aware if Fire OS 5 has improved the 5GHz Wi-Fi connection?

I have Apple Routers and have to set the channel to manual to allow it to connect, I will test tomorrow but thought I would take advantage of the live Newscast and ask you!

  20. Andrew says:

When if ever will a twc app come to aftv???

  21. Sam Winchester says:

Any chance of openvpn or at least some kind of proxy support?
