While apps like Kodi and MrMC do much of the same, I’ve personally switched over to Plex for its unified database that keeps all of my devices in sync and for its simplicity, especially for accessing my media outside of the home. Most of Plex’s features are free, but a few premium features require a Plex Pass. Some of those premium features that I use most are hardware transcoding, which is a must for accessing content outside of your home network, TV show intro skipping, and remote content downloading, which comes in very handy when poor cellular/wifi speeds are too low to stream.

I was thinking about getting premium for the hardware transcoding, but I have found almost everything I test does not need any transcoding.
If you’re strictly playing locally on modern streamers, you’ll probably never transcode anything. It’s mainly useful for streaming your content when you’re away from home or for giving friends/family access to your library.
The only outside the house viewing I do is on fire tvs, which don’t need transcoding. I have also testing a couple cell phones, and they didnt seem to need it either. Maybe it helps that my cable connection has a 50meg upload speed?
It’s not codec support on the playback device that requires transcoding for me. It’s scenarios with limited bandwidth where transcoding helps. When traveling with a Fire TV, if hotel wifi is too slow, I’ll set Plex to transcode everything down to 720p so that it doesn’t need to buffer.
This is or was a great deal, I’ve be a on and off subscriber for years and recently went to a year pass. Not only did I get the 20% off but they also gave me credit (pro-rated) for the year I had.
