The NVIDIA Shield TV is currently on sale. Combining that with the ongoing promotion where you get a free Echo Dot with every purchase means you can get a Shield TV + Echo Dot 3 for $139.99. The lowest price the Shield TV has ever been is $139, so the fact that you get it for that price with the all-new Echo Dot included makes this the best deal on a Shield TV that has ever been available. The Shield TV is really the only media streamer running official Android TV that anyone should consider. Google’s efforts towards Android TV has been lacking, to say the least, but NVIDIA continues to support the Shield TV and add features to make up for it. UPDATE: Echo Dot is no longer included for free, but the Shield TV is still on sale for $139.99.
Just found my old Logitech Revue which was gathering dust on the top of the TV Armoire. I will never buy an Android TV product ever because of the lack of support by Google on that product. I don’t mind being a beta tester if that is what I signed up for but Google’s appalling lack of effort continues forward in this space. I am all for experimentation, but you do that within a controlled environment and not on a released “product”.
I think it’s up to Logitech to support the device, not Google. Nvidia’s been on the ball about updating the Shield to the latest version of Android TV.
If I had the spare money, I’d jump on this deal in a heartbeat.
Basically if you need a real 4K local file streamer or need a local file streamer that that plays DTS or DTS HD or TrueHD you get a Sheild.
If you are only going by to watch 4K streaming like Netflix and don’t care about DTS etc you buy a Fire TV.
Btw all of the Android TV apps Perform worse than the Fire TV ones. Hulu Nettlix etc all get way less updates than the Fire apps do.
Can a person even run apps like Hulu Live TV on the Shield, without using an airmouse?
Wanted a Shield for years and yet I find myself not interested, even with a free Echo I don’t want.
I have a Stream+ for DVR and it’s running an official AdroidTV build. Even though it’s not being updated much, it’s still OK for me as a DVR, but I seldom use it to run apps.
Thanks just went and got one
I ran across a Tweet the other day that the Stick 4K will go on sale on the 18th.
I’m going to order my second one.
Feel like there’s going to be an update for this device soon. When was if last updated? 2016?
Lol what? The Shield just got another update a couple months ago, if that long, it’s 20th update since 2015. Wow. Just wow.
He may have meant the hardware.
This is a 2017 device and I have the same feeling that they will be updating it too. I got one anyways because it is still the most complete machine out and Amazon still hasn’t bettered it’s AFTV2.
I think HDHomerun users love the experience using the Shield.
What do you think they would update?
Is there a site like this one but for NVIDIA Shield TV?
Not really (Elias makes AFTV a unique one-stop resource), but you can use:
