The first-generation NVIDIA Shield TV is starting to receive software update 5.0 that adds many of the new features announced for the 2nd-gen Shield TV to the older hardware. Top on the list of additions is an Amazon Video app that, for the first time, brings all of Amazon’s streaming content to set-top box running Android TV.
The Amazon Video app on the Shield TV is a full-fledged app that gives full access to Prime Video, Amazon Channels, and more. The app’s interface looks just like the old Fire TV interface, and supports buying or renting content directly within the app using your Amazon account.
The 5.0 update also adds apps for NFL, Twitter, Comedy Central, Vimeo, and Viki, which are all also available on Fire TV devices. Not available on the Fire TV is NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming service which has received a performance increase with this latest update that now allows users to play games with up to GeForce GTX 1080 caliber gaming graphics. To make finding games a bit easier, the update has added a new NVIDIA Games App which lists GeForce NOW games, exclusive Android games, and GameStream titles. Those with a PC and compatible graphics card that can take advantage of NVIDIA GameStream can now use the Shield TV to remotely play their games in 4K HDR over their local network.
Other changes brought by the update are Android 7.0 Nougat, which brings with it a recent apps page, picture-in-picture support, and a new settings menu. Those with a Nest Cam can now also watch live video from their camera through the Shield TV.
Some of us Shield owners have sideloaded an Amazon app already. Will we need to uninstall that before the system update that has a preloaded Amazon app?
Nvidia have now posted on their forum that existing owners will get an update soon https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/988354/shield-tv/shield-experience-upgrade-5-0-feedback-thread-1-16-17-/
The second post on the Geforce forum adds, “Issues and Updates:
SHIELD Experience Software 3.0 is available for SHIELD and SHIELD Pro today. For earlier SHIELD (2015) and SHIELD Pro (2015), an update will made available soon.”
Hopefully soon is not too far, but that leads me to think it is not today. I have not seen any reports on forums, Geforce and XDA, that indicate anyone has received the update on their 2015 model yet. Any udpate confirmations out there?
More from the Geforce forum, the OP’s reply on timing via twitter. It is not coming today, but likely in a week.

“We never announced an official date when it would be released but likely in a week or so.”
Sadly we will have to way for a whole week, let’s hope that only be one, for the update.
To me, the main weak point of the AFTV is the lack of support for modern filesystems that support large file sizes (EXT4, NTFS etc.).
How about that on the Nvidia Shield?
Would be a huge bullet point for the Shield.
It does support Ntfs.
For what? My 1st gen Shield TV used ext4 when I added a USB 3 storage device as internal storage. It may very well support ntfs for some things but there seemed be limitations. Are you talking just read access?
Still no update yet for my shield tv 1. Btw will the uodate have tnt and Nbc sports app?
Mine had the update dialog waiting this morning. Updated it and each controller successfully. I just haven’t had time to play with it as life had other priorities in plan for me.
