Nvidia Shield TV issues caused by Android 11 update can be fixed with manually installed updates

Earlier this month, Nvidia rolled out an Android 11 update for the Shield TV. Unfortunately, the update has been a hot mess for a lot of people. Bugs in the update have broken app file access and Plex Server capabilities, to name a few. Nvidia has released 3 separate hotfixes for these issues, so far. These updates have not been pushed out to devices yet, so you’ll need to install them manually if you don’t want to wait for the public release. However, be aware that these fixes come with several caveats, like not being able to roll them back, not allowing you to watch HD HomeRun DRM channels, not allowing Disney+ to be installed, and others. Proceed with caution or sit tight for Nvidia to finish fixing all the issues and push out a public non-manual update to everyone.

I found alot of problems were fixed with a factory reset except the plex server is still broken.

At a minimum, I absolutely could not access the home screen until I found a way around my 3rd party Wolf launcher on my 2017. My 2019 did not have the issue. I just uninstalled it and its manager for now.

Complete and utter incompetence. Customers should demand a full refund of the purchase price so they can move on to another device.

Hot fix negatively impacts HDHomerun, among other issues. I’ll probably not join the hot fix club.

Updated SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.0 Known Issues

I’m lucky. My only problem was voice search in my ‘Tube app, which was solved by giving the app permission to use the mic, everything else worked from the reboot, including Kodi fed by a NAT. I feel for the people that are struggling with file access problems from Android TV 12’s new file permission system.

For me… Subtitles in Plex error, when I close Netflix Hulu will open & I have to reboot my Shield everyday for apps to work. Hopefully Nvidia pushes out fixes soon.

When I switch to another input on my onkyo amp and switch back to shield I have no audio so I have to reboot the shield. I never had this issue until the update and my other shield in the bedroom that’s not attached to a amp hasn’t got any issues. I mainly use both for Kodi so I suspect it’s a kodi issue.

Is anyone having issues with YouTubetv due to update? The problem I’m having is when you rewind a show the picture looks scrabbled.

Yes, I have that issue when rewinding or moving forward. Its almost like the video needs to hit a keyframe before it corrects itself.

I am also seeing with the YoutubeTV app where it will crash frequently when starting a show after moving forward or back and returning me to the main screen.

I’m having HDR issues with Plex. Certain videos looked washed out and the colors look off. Only certain videos though. Others play just fine. Very odd.

    YouTube works totally normally.

How about watching YouTube and all sudden wifi disconnects and takes down with it my wifi router… That’s a big one…. Lucky I can still use it with Ethernet cable…

Yeah this is happening with Hulu since update. Also YouTube and YouTube kids won’t load half of the time. All my other apps are fine.

Glad I waited… will hold off until there’s a proper public update.
