Nvidia has announced a new high-end tier for its GeForce Now cloud gaming service. The “RTX 3080” plan, as it’s being called, promises a dedicated gaming rig in the cloud with an RTX 3080 graphics card that delivers up to 1440p resolution and 120 fps on Mac and PCs. However, exclusively on Shield TV and Shield TV Pro devices, the resolution can go up to 4K with HDR. Nvidia says they do plan to eventually bring 4K cloud gaming to other devices, such as PCs with GeForce graphics cards and other Android TV devices. The new RTX 3080 tier isn’t cheap at $99 per 6 months, plus you’re still buying the games individually. The new service is expected to launch in the US next month and in Europe in December. Existing Founders and Priority subscribers can preorder now.

I question at what point is it time to start comparing the Shield to an Xbox or a PlayStation rather than continually trying to compare it to Fire tv’s or other streaming boxes just to make it look good? Every Shield comparison article ends the same way: “Get a Shield It’s Better” Yeah, so isn’t a Ferrari compared to a Chevy. Why are Shields never compared to an Xbox or PlayStation, how would they stack up then for Streaming and Gaming Capabilities?
Because the Shield is Nvidia’s streaming box that they try and make distinct from other streamers by making it the best gaming streaming box, as is illustrated by the content of this posting.
The Shield is a streaming box that also games. The Xbox and Playstations OTOH are gaming consoles that also stream. The primary intent of the Shield as a streamer is shown in its settings that are completely built around, for example, Dolby surround sound up to and including ATMOS, AI assisted upscaling of video, CEC and infrared for remotes, and video frame rate matching on demand (beta). The gaming, while clearly an advertised feature of the device, is more just added on.
So as a media streaming box, albeit, one that games (poorly IMO, but thats NVidia’s doing currently) it competes with the FireTV and AppleTV media streamers, rather than in the gaming console market.
To use your analogy, you’re demanding that Ferrari’s should compete on Nascar, or people should STFU about them being better than Corvettes.
A streaming device that can’t do the most basic streaming? Such as YouTube 4K HDR reproduction. That only the other day got Hulu 4K (and only the 2019 version) while all the other streamers have it for ages. The 2nd most popular channel of the UK, All4, no app for Android TV, available on all the others. The Shield can’t compete with an Xbox nor a PlayStation in gaming and can’t compete with a simple amazon or roku stick in streaming. It’s an ok media player.
Ok, so there you have a criteria where the Shield may, or may not as you say, compare to other streaming boxes in streaming capabilities. If what you’re describing is of critical importance to you, then you have a great reason to choose a device that does what you clearly find important as a feature.
But as my point was and remains, the Shield competes as a streamer (apparently a poor one, according to your specific priority) rather than a gaming console that also streams.

One would suggest that it’s basic falsifiability by simple observance calls into question your point’s entire credibility, given a conventional definition of “the most basic streaming”.
Funny enough, the Shield TV originally launched as an “Android Gaming Console” first and formest. That’s why it came with only a game controller and the remote was a $50 extra purchase. Android gaming never lived up to Nvidia’s hopes, so they correctly pivoted the box to be a streaming device first.

and man, they NEVER disappoint! My whole question was just a joke, but flew over some heads. Seriously though, I do often find it quite curious why Shield owners LOVE to beat up on all other devices. I mean why do they care so much what other people use to stream?

I always thought Nvidia shield was too expensive. This would bring high end gaming to it but for that price I think Id rather have a a PS5. All in here I think you’d need to spend over $400 just to play. (Nvidia shield, controller, subscription, and buy a game.)

I answered that it was a streamer rather than a console as evidenced by its dedicated media centered settings, and thus competes in the streamer market.
