NVIDIA now offers the Shield TV with only a remote for $179

NVIDIA is now making their Shield TV available without a game controller for $179. That’s $20 less than the original $199.99 bundle that includes both a game controller and remote control. This is new bundle includes the same 16GB model that was released in January of this year. Considering the Shield game controller costs $59.99 on its own, you’re going to want to be pretty certain that you don’t want a game controller before buying the new bundle. The game controller is also required for the hands-free “Ok Google” capabilities that were promised in January of this year but have still not arrived. Pre-orders for the new bundle begin today and ship on October 18.

Thanks for the heads up! May consider pulling the trigger on this to replace the 2nd Gen in the bedroom. Already have the 2015 model in the living room, and with the Fire TV’s new update and ever more intrusive advertising banner, I’m looking rid myself of their devices.

  2. Steve says:

You don’t want this. The TV remote is crap. Mine sometimes disconnects and I have to use the game controller to reconnect (and that’s after they replaced the original one which was worse). It also skips sometimes when trying to input a control. $20 difference is all??? If they knocked of $50, I’d say maybe, but with caution. nVidia is such a ripoff.

Can anyone comment if the Harmony remote has any issues with the Shield?

      • Tinwarble says:

Depends on which Harmony you’re referring to. The Harmony Smart Control Hub (or other Hub based remotes) works great with the Shield, though you may have some issues setting it up (all on Logitech) with the recent Harmony update.

    • Jon says:

The Shield is far from a rip off, it is amazing. I do agree the remote is junk, but not because it does not work. It works perfectly, it just does not have all the buttons that I wish it had. It is usable once you get use to the oddness of the remote buttons.

Regardless, I would not purchase this. Sign up for Frys promo codes, you can get the Shield with the game controller on sale fairly often. There are not a tun of great Android games (at least that I enjoy), but it is really neat to be able to play a few games with the Shield.

  3. Jim C says:

I would jump on this is a heartbeat, but seriously?? Only $20 off for not including the game controller? If a person wanted to add the controller later you would be shelling out $60. Nvidia should have dropped the price the full cost of the game controller and then this would be a great deal and the price point would really give the other major companies fits!

    • Tinwarble says:

People seem not to understand that Nvidia offsets the cost of the Shield by selling subscriptions for GForce Now, something that gets undercut by not including the controller.

This is the same thing that Amazon does with the Fire TV devices, selling them at a lower cost because of Amazon Prime/Video.

What a horrible joke of deal. $20 off ripoff.
