New software update rolling out to the Amazon Fire TV 3

A new software update is starting to roll out to the Amazon Fire TV 3. The new update still carries version number 6.2.1.0 but it changes the build number from NS6210/397 to NS6210/399. Since only the build number changed, that’s usually an indication that the update contains only bug fixes without introducing any new features.

It’s worth noting that Amazon is doing something strange with the version and build numbers of the Fire TV 3 software updates. Amazon’s Fire TV Software Update page lists 6.2.1.1 as the latest software version for the Fire TV 3, even though the devices themselves list 6.2.1.0. Yesterday, the latest build value for the supposed 6.2.1.1 version on the Amazon page was listed as 0000033656196 and has now been updated to 0000033656708. Both of those values don’t seem to correlate with the strange new build values being displayed in Fire OS 6, so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

Regardless of what’s going on with Amazon’s version numbering, this latest update probably fixes bugs that have emerged now that the Fire TV 3 is in the hands of regular customers. As always, it’s difficult to tell what has been changed or fixed with this latest update, because Amazon simply says it “includes general improvements and bug fixes.”

The new update does seem to include a new version of the Appstore app on the Fire TV. That app is the one responsible for generating your list of installed apps on the Fire TV Home screen and other places, so perhaps it fixes the issue where people are seeing an empty app list after completing the device’s initial setup. The second Fire TV 3 I set up this morning downloaded this new update during the setup process and it did not have an empty app row, while my first Fire TV 3 on the NS6210/397 version of 6.2.1.0 did, so it looks promising that the issue has been fixed.

Another issue that I’m aware of people having with the Fire TV 3 is unusually low volume. I have not experienced that on my devices, so I can’t know if it has been addressed in this latest update. If you had low volume and have noticed that it is now fixed after receiving this latest update, please let us know in the comments below, and as always, if anyone notices anything else changed or fixed, please mention that in the comments as well.

The two things they need to fix are DD+ always on regardless of source and HDR mode sticking when you’ve finished an HDR show.

Fingers crossed it auto mounts USB drives.

honestly I think the fire TV 3 is a massive leap backwards.

I set up a new FTV Gen 3 this morning. What a PITA. It took nearly 2 hours for my uninformed self to get my desired apps loaded.
After the initial set up, I downloaded my basic apps, then added Downloader (v1.1.7) and then went to start adding Aptoide, Kodi, etc. and immediately hit a wall with not being able to go to the URLs or install.
After searching high and low for options between TP and here, I finally got lucky although I do not know if what I did is what solved the issue.
I noticed that Downloader did not have rights to save files. I changed the file location to the pre-existing ‘Download’ folder after looking around with ES File Manager, cleared data and cache on Downloader and then pointed to the TP link for Aptoide. Suddenly everything was working.
Along the way I learned way more than I intended on the device; 64-bit hardware with 32-bit OS seems odd that they are not exploiting the full hardware capabilities.
At this point, I’m really not impressed with the performance over the previous Fire Stick 2. I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep it yet.

Amazon needs to do a recall on FTV3 and replace it with a quality product.

How do I upgrade the Firestick? What video do I watch?

The amazon fire tv 3 closely resembles the Mi Box 3. In terms of specs and CPU, with the exception of the OS. Mi Box (Android TV), AFIRE TV 3 (Amazon OS), still very hard to decide if to upgrade from v2.

I think the audio problem is not low volume, it’s that the volume actually varies over time. This seems to have improved a bit, but is certainly still not useable. I’m back on the Fire TV 2 until the next update.

Has anyone figured out the problem with Aptoide tv not working on AFTV3?

  12. Alex says:

I just got the Fire TV 3 because they were on sale for $45. While my other apps work fine Spotify volume is terrible. Amazon CS was no help. Should I just return it and get another stick? I bought the Fire TV 3 on a whim with zero research.
