New home screen coming to Amazon Fire Tablets for Kids ages 8 and up

Along with today’s announcement of the rebranding of Amazon FreeTime into Amazon Kids, Amazon has revealed that a new home screen option will be coming to Fire tablets. The new home screen will be an alternative to the current kid-friendly FreeTime experience available for child profiles. The new interface is meant to be closer to a more traditional tablet for children ages 8 and up.

At the top of the new interface option are icons to various sections like Music, Videos, Apps & Games, Books, and Educational. Each one will take kids to age-appropriate content of each type. Further down the home screen are themed rows with content groupings and recommendations, similar to what you find on the Amazon Fire TV’s home screen.

This new home screen theme for Fire tablets is meant to be a better transitional step between the existing bright and bubbly FreeTime interface and the regular adult interface of Amazon’s tablets. It will be rolling out to devices in the coming weeks, prior to the Amazon Kids rebranding. Parents will be able to enable the new theme under the “Adjust Age Filters and Themes” section of a child’s profile in the Amazon Parent Dashboard, once it’s available.
