The new Fire TV Game Controller appears to be a big improvement over the 1st-gen Fire Game Controller. The new built-in headphone jack is a welcomed addition, and the inclusion of a microphone this time around means it can perform all the functionality of the voice remote. One thing missing, however, are dedicated PLAY/PAUSE/REWIND/FORWARD buttons. Thankfully, the fine folks at Amazon’s LAB126 have cleverly made it so the controller’s shoulder buttons and joysticks act as media keys when a video is playing. Interestingly, the controller’s left and right triggers are used to lower and raise the headphone volume, which begs the question, how do you change the volume in games that use the triggers? We’ll find out on Monday when the new Fire TV Gaming Edition arrives.
i ordered the regular New FireTV with remote. i ordered the game controller separately. it sucks that the new game controller will not ship until Oct 22nd. This way i only pay 10 more dollars to have both vs 180 to get the gaming edition and the voice remote afterwards. Amazon should have included both. Looks like a great controller and cannot wait to test it out!
What are the chances that this new controller can connect to a PC and work as a standard xbox controller?
Pretty slim I’d say, since it uses wifi direct to connect.
Is Wi-Fi Direct Connect a standard? Would a PC with WiFi that supports it be able to use it? Even if it means disabling the PC’s normal WiFi networking ability?
My Logitech USB controller has these functions except the Mic button. And Headset volume.
I bought one of these with the idea that my fire tv v1.0 would be updated to work with it. The controller got here, but the website still says “update will happen in coming weeks”. Any news on the date for that update? Thanks!
Never mind, I found out I could install the developer update and that did allow me to use the controller.
