New app ‘IMDb What to Watch’ launches exclusively on Fire TV to help you find recommendations through games

Amazon has launched a new app called IMDb What to Watch to help you find new movies and TV shows to watch. It does this through three different game-like interaction methods to make flipping through recommendations a bit more fun than the usual endless lists that you usually scroll through when trying to figure out what to watch.

The first game in the app is called Quick Draw, although it’s not very game-like. It simply displays three content options for you to consider. If none of them interest you, you can press the Deal Cards option to get a fresh set of three recommendations.

The second game is called Watch Challenge where you can scroll through various lists of content to choose from. These lists include things like the top 250 movies of all time, award-winning titles, and popular franchises. You can check off titles as watched as you watch them and the game is to try to complete a list by watching all titles in the list.

The final game is called This or That where, at the start, you are asked a series of quick questions to narrow down the pool of recommendations. When you’re done going through the simple this or that set of questions, you’re shown a list of six titles that fit all the criteria that you’ve narrowed down to. Questions include things like movie ratings, genre, setting, length, and more.

The app is already available in the Amazon Appstore for Fire TV devices in the U.S. Very disappointingly, Amazon has chosen to not support older Fire TV models like the 1st-gen Fire TV, 2nd-gen Fire TV, and 1st-gen Fire TV Stick.

Huh??? This seems unnecessary. How about giving us a better recommendation and search experience? The recent Home Page update removed some of the more granular category options you could choose. Why not give us more categories with the ability to select/filter multiple choices via a Fire TV remote to pull together a search recommendation? Not sure how installing an app on a memory starved device to play games to get recommendations is progress. I’ll pass.

I can’t believe they wasted resources on this.

Do we get to pass on this or will it end up being a system app?

I know that all steaming services want to keep viewers engaged with their particular service, but I never use recommendations from any service. I find it insulting that they think I’m not intelligent enough to figure out whatI want to watch on my own. By making a game out of the recommendation process, this new app leads me to believe they think we’re all children who can’t think on our own.

Why didn’t they name it ‘Freevee What To Watch’?
