A new Amazon tablet has just passed through FCC approval. The tablet carries FCC ID # 2AIP5-3975 and model number SL056ZE. As with all of Amazon’s FCC filings, there is no explicit marking that the tablet is made by Amazon, but it has plenty of signs that give it away as an Amazon device.
The most revealing information about the device, like its photos and user manual, are expectedly absent due to a confidentiality request submitted by Amazon, but we do know the device is capable of 802.11ac dual-band WiFi and includes a microSD card slot for expanding its internal storage.
Amazon just released new versions of their Fire 7 tablet and Fire HD 8 tablet in June of this year, so it’s very unlikely this new tablet is a replacement for either of those models. This new tablet is most likely a successor to Amazon’s flagship tablet, the Fire HD 10.
The last time the Fire HD 10 was updated was in June of last year. However, it’s difficult to really call that an update, since they just released the same internals in a new aluminum body and started offering a 64GB model. The last time the internals of the Fire HD 10 were updated was 2 years ago in September of 2015.
In addition to a rumored new Amazon Echo and two new Fire TV models, it looks like Amazon will also be releasing a new tablet soon. Come this Holiday shopping season, there should be plenty of new Amazon hardware to consider.
I wanted Amazon to offer tablets as good as the HDX series. Mine is dying a slow death. In order to be able to listen to the headphones/speakers, I have to use two pegs attached to it near the headphone socket. It’s a very delicate balance.
I second that. I really wish they would release another 8.9 inch HDX. It was the perfect size screen. I loved that tablet. Should have never given it away. :(
My 1st gen Kindle Fire 8.9 inch HDX has a few things that I think make it special.
The tablet is lighter than any iPad I’ve had, including the iPad Air. Especially considering the screen size.
The HDX has enough grip and is rugged enough for me to hold without a case. Every iPad (iPhone too!) I’ve had since the first one is too slippery to hold without some type of case.
I loved my HDX. Power port went bad and I haven’t seen a similar model offered since, so I haven’t replaced it.
I use mine almost explicitly for Comixology but the battery is starting to fail. Since Comixology is no longer available for Windows as an app, I can’t use my SP3 as a replacement. Really need another high res reasonably priced tablet.
I doubt Amazon will make another ‘high end’ tablet again, given the relative success of their ‘cheap but cheerful’ approach.
If they do, I suspect it will be a niche product with it priced and marketed as such.
Elias “Scoops” Saba strikes again! :-)
