Amazon has announced a new 5th-gen Echo Dot, a new Echo Dot with Clock, and new Echo Dot Kids today at its big hardware event. Apart from some new colors for the main Dot and new prints for the Kids Dot, these new smart speakers look just like the previous generation Echo Dot but it’s the inside where most of the updates have occurred.

For the new Echo Dot, Amazon says it has improved the sound quality while retaining the same small size. The vocals are said to be clearer with the new model and it is said to have “up to twice the base.” Amazon also says that it reduced audio distortion by 50%, which, I assume, is probably referring to when you turn the volume up to the max level.

If you have an Eero mesh WiFi network, the new Echo Dot will now also act as a WiFi extender to push the range of your network a little further. Better yet, Amazon will be rolling out an update in the coming months to all 4th-gen Echo Dots that make them capable of acting as WiFi extenders to Eero networks as well.

Amazon has also added a temperature sensor to the Echo Dot which can be used to trigger Alexa Routines in addition to just telling you the current temperature in the room. There’s also now an accelerometer in the Echo Dot to detect taps so you can smack the top of the device to pause music, stop timers, end a call, and other actions.

The new Echo Dot with Clock is getting the same updates as the regular Echo Dot, but it’s also gaining a more functional display. Whereas the previous generation Echo Dot could only show you the time, the display on the new one can act as a ticker message to scroll the name of song titles, snooze countdowns, weather forecasts, calendar events, and more.

As has always bene the case, the new Echo Dot Kids version is identical to the regular Echo Dot but it comes with a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids and a 2-year worry-free replacement guarantee.

The new Echo Dot is available to pre-order for $49.99 in Charcoal, Glacier White, and a new Deep Sea Blue color. The Echo Dot with CLock is available to pre-order for $59.99 in Glacier White and a new Cloud Blue color. The new Echo DOt Kids can be pre-ordered for $59.99 and is available in new Dragon and Owl prints. They will all be released on October 20th.
