You may be surprised to hear that Netflix does not own its original shows outright. They merely license the programs from studios like Sony Pictures and Weinstein Co. This is why you’ll find some of Netflix’s top shows like House of Cards, Hemlock, and Lilyhammer available on its biggest competer, Amazon Instant Video. That will be changing in the future because Netflix’s CEO, Reed Hastings, told Bloomberg that his company will be “taking on ownership and production” of many of their original shows next year. With this move towards ownership, you can expect to see fewer and fewer Netflix shows available outside of the streaming service’s own apps. Lets just hope those apps remain available on Fire TV devices.
