Modified Xbox Game Pass app from Fire TV works on Android TV and Google TV

The Xbox app for Game Pass cloud gaming arrived on the newest Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max earlier this week. While the app can be sideloaded on older Fire TV models running Fire OS 7 and works fine, the same can’t be said about Android TV and Google TV devices, due to an issue preventing users from logging into their Microsoft account on those devices. It turns out, the APK just needed to be slightly modified for it to work on Android TV and Google TV devices.

When sideloading the Fire TV version of Microsoft’s Xbox app onto an Android TV or Google TV device, an Xbox loading logo appears and remains forever when you try to log into your Microsoft account. The reason for this issue was that the app only had permission to access xbox.com in its configuration. On Android TV and Google TV devices, it also needs permission to access live.com and microsoftonline.com to complete the login process. I modified the APK to allow access to those additional domains and now the app works fine on Android TV and Google TV devices.

When sideloaded on an Android TV or Google TV device, the app still uses a tablet interface instead of the TV interface seen on Fire TV devices. I may look into fixing this as well in the future, but the tablet interface is fully navigatable using a remote and controller, so it’s just a minor inconvenience. Pairing controllers through this interface is a bit flakey as well, so just be sure to pair your controller through the device’s settings menu before launching the Xbox app and it will work fine in the app.

To sideload this modified version of the Xbox app on an Android TV or Google TV device, use the Downloader app from the Google Play Store and enter short code 2203 (or aftv.news/2203). The modified APK will download and install as usual. For more detailed instructions, see this guide. If you’re looking to sideload the Xbox app on a Fire TV device running Fire OS 7, you should still use short code 2202 to install the unmodified version. This modified version still does not work on Fire TV models running Fire OS 5 or 6 because it’s the old OS version preventing the app from working and not the log in issue.

I’ve got a 4k stick. Is my only option to upgrade to 4k max ?

    • I’m assuming you mean you have a 1st-gen Fire TV Stick 4K, which runs Fire OS 6. There’s no way to know if Microsoft is ever going to support Fire OS 6, but, right now, there is no way for the current APK to work on that OS.

If you’re looking to upgrade specifically to play Game Pass games, the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick 4K is a good option because it’s officially supported and is on sale for Prime Day for $25. If that’s too much, the absolute cheapest option is to get the Fire TV Stick Lite for $15 and sideload the unmodified Xbox app.

Thanks for making this! I use Onn 4k pro and Chromecast with Google TV.

Could you please publish the new version of the application? released a 3.0.6 update on the Amazon Appstore, maybe they fixed some login and interface issues

I tested this and on very good internet this work horrible. Big ping, input lag, desynchronization picture and sound. Additionally all games running on Xbox series S, when you use Xbox fire tv app! This is unacceptable!
