Minecraft drops Fire TV support with latest version

Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, have just released version 0.9.0 of their immensely popular game and are touting it as their “biggest update EVER”. With this update, the best selling app in the Amazon Appstore has dropped support for the Fire TV. We’re sure this is temporary, as it’s not unusual for an app developer to drop specific hardware support temporarily so as to not delay the release of an update. This is why some developers opt to release a separate “Fire TV Edition” of their app so that the original app can be updated while the Fire TV version remains available.

If you have already purchased and installed Minecraft on your Fire TV, you can continue playing the previous version without issue. Oddly enough, if you uninstall the game and reinstall, you will get the new “incompatible” v0.9.0 updated version. Be careful because you will lose your existing saved world if you uninstall. The new version seems to work fine with the Fire TV. Our first attempt at creating a new world with v0.9.0 on the Fire TV caused the game to crash, but worked fine on our second attempt. We didn’t do any thorough testing, so if you want to avoid issues, we recommend not uninstalling and sticking with the previous version until.

Update

That didn’t take long at all. Minecraft is once again compatible with the Fire TV

October 22nd Oct; Minecraft PE Amazon Fire TV won’t respond to controller on start-up. Any further attempts to start game ping back to home menu. Have tried uninstall, clear cache, clear data. Mojang/Amazon please fix this chop chop!
