Kodi version 17.6 has just been released. The team says this will be the final update for v17 “Krypton” that they will release. The Kodi team has been working on the next major version of Kodi, which is v18 “Leia,” for several months and have been backporting important fixes to Kodi v17 as they come up, but now they will concentrate solely on v18 moving forward.
This latest 17.6 version of Kodi includes several minor bug fixes and everyone is recommended to update. The issues addressed include a couple of crash fixes involving the joystick add-on and controller dialog, and a possible connection issue with the internal webserver. This update also includes updates to the content scrapers to the latest available versions.
For Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Edition television owners, the simplest way to install this latest version from scratch or update an existing installation is to use my Downloader app and enter

After installing the KODI update, will all of the little extras we love need to be re-installed?
Normally with minor updates like this, it’s an update in place and most things just continue working as normal.
Is SPMC still the version of Kodi to use on Android devices?
SPMC is missing the microphone input for Fire TV. If Kodi were to offer this, many would stop using SPMC and make the switch.
I admit I have not keep up on this, but a while back I thought the theory was Kodi was no longer going to support or be optimize from Android. Therefore SPMC was specific to providing better support for such devices. Is this untrue, or no longer the case?
SPMC sucks, it’s still on Jarvis. I believe Koying gave up on the project. Kodi is now good enough to work with with Fire TV that SPMC is now redundant
Thanks for the heads up, as I didn’t know it was abandoned. I don’t really pay attention to the version numbers, and the older GUI never really bothered me since I knew how to find what I needed. I guess I’ll try the latest kodi.
I am on version 18.1 and it sux HOW DO I COME BACK TO THIS VERSION???
Stop trying to spread FUD.The project isn’t abandoned and he is still doing commits. The last release was literally 3 months ago and the last Kodi 17 based Alpha was Sept 30th. As far as SPMC “sucks” what exactly have you done for Kodi on Android? Come on, lets see your Github repository where you can show the hundreds and hundreds of hours of code you created for FREE so ungrateful people like yourself can come here and point how crappy it is all the while benefiting from said code. You can apologize anytime now.
@gamek He is probably one of the many people who feel that Kodi provides content and is the answer to all their “free” pirated content needs then turns around and blames Team Kodi when all his shitty pirate add-ons stop working.
I just found this website a few weeks ago and you really do a fabulous job. It’s become one of my favorite daily stops on the internet!
I beleieve update (to 17.6 64-bit) may have fixed intermittent music playback gap on My Book (SMB). Thanks Elias.
Is the Element Fire TV OS 64 bit?
To answer my own question, it’s 32 bit.
I use MrMC on my FTVs, but use SPMC on my Mi Box and Shields. I tried this version of Kodi, and am having a tough time getting past some annoyances. The menu button no longer pulls up the codec overlay when vids are playing. And hitting the back a couple time to go back to the main menu leaves the video playing rather than pausing/stopping it.
I’m sticking with SPMC for now.
Install the keymapper addon for Kodi, SPMC does have different keys mapped differently. You can get the same with Kodi, you just have to tweak it for your remote and the easiest way to do this is with the addon.
Another important SPMC advantage: DTS audio support. Can’t do that with Kodi Krypton. MrMC also supports DTS pass through.
Yeah, I’m sticking with SPMC for now, at least until I see something concrete that it isn’t being updated. McMC serves my FTVs well, so this is only an issue for the Mibox/Shield.
how do you get to the main menu? where I can add addons and such
Any idea why I am getting this error:
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]”
I’m on an AFTV2, using your link: bit.ly/kodi64176
I’ve gotten this error before and the only way I got around it was by completely uninstalling the previous version.
Disregard – I figured it out. I was using a custom icon on the previous version using this guide (http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-use-custom-icons-for-sideloaded-apps-like-kodi-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/) and it resigned the apk different from the Kodi 17.6 downloaded version.
To resolve, I had to use the custom icon guide for the new version and it resigned it the same as the old one.
