MrMC, the only forked version of Kodi that is in the official Fire TV appstore, has reduced the app’s price from $6.99 to $5.99, and it now also runs on Fire tablets. I’m told by the developers that the price was lowered to $5.99 because it was simpler to use a single binary for both tablets and the Fire TV, so the Fire TV price was lowered to match their usual tablet app prices, instead of raising the tablet price to match their usual TV app prices. For comparison, MrMC remains $6.99 on the Apple TV and $5.99 on iPhone/iPad because iOS devices use separate MrMC binaries for the two platforms. While the new price is certainly still too high for most Kodi users, since Kodi is available to sideload for free, having an official app is worth it for some.
As for the new tablet support, buying the app for the Fire TV will allow you to install it on supported Fire tablets, and vice versa. All Amazon made tablets that support Fire OS 5 are supported by MrMC. That includes the Fire HD 6 & 7 released in 2014, the newer Fire HD 8 & 10 released last year, and the $50 Fire tablet. Of course, the app also supports the Fire TV 1, 2, and Fire TV Stick.
Changes in version 2.3 of MrMC being released today focus primarily on bug fixes and the new tablet support. The app’s developers tell me they’re hoping to build in refresh rate switching into the app by the next version. That feature allows the app to automatically change the Fire TV’s video output refresh rate to match the content being watched, resulting in a perfect 1-to-1 match of your TV’s refresh rate to the frame rate of the video file. This is a feature many videophiles have been wanting out of the Fire TV ever since it first debuted. If MrMC’s developers can pull it off, it’ll be the first Fire TV app so have refresh rate switching, which is a feature even Amazon’s own video player can’t perform.

The unintended consequences of banning Kodi are the the re-sellers of fire tv sticks on ebay and the subsequent banning of those Amazon customers from buying anymore fire tv sticks.
Buying MrMC instead of sideloading Kodi/SPMC is like buying a bottle of dehydrated water because it comes with an official recipe.

And despite Pete’s assertions to the contrary, my metaphor was very funny. Humor is subjective, and his posts in this thread clearly indicate that he has an emotional investment in MrMC. Emotional investments make for blind spots, ask any parent.
I don’t fault rootcoder for offering the product, and I appreciate his efforts with Kodi, but I don’t see any /real/ benefit to using MrMC over Kodi. If your grateful to him, make a paypal donation and continue using Kodi until MrMC can justify why it should replace it.
OTOH, if sideloading is just too, too difficult, despite the fact that you were somehow can set up local media that needs to be watched, buy MrMC.

As expected, people who either didn’t read, understand or just ignored the points (and request to not pile hate onto the developer by the admin of this site for many reasons) are chiming in with vitriolic and ill-informed remarks.
Before becoming an armchair developer or businessperson, you might want to read the other threads and look into the background of this app and its developer(s) – hint, it has to do with him pretty much being the only reason Kodi exists on Android at all…

Refresh rate switching would be amazing, and would probably be enough to make me move from appletv.
Great work on mrmc! A few quid for a properly maintained kodi is well worth it in my house. My lunch yesterday was more expensive.
Ridiculous price while piggybacking an open source Kodi. It’s dropping as nobody in their right mind would buy it.
Read the other posts about this app and dev (which were riddled with similar misconceptions). I’d explain here – OK I’ll at least say that this dev is basically the reason Kodi exists on Android at all for starters – but you can find the rest of the information you need with a simple search of this site.
This guy posted the same responses the first time this was posted, despite the Kodi/SPMC developers clearly stating the case and support for this product. He ignored these responses. He is a troll. Don’t feed him.
I love mrmc. I run both Kodi and Mrmc side by side. It’s nice to have a program that updates automatically. I’m finding a use for both programs. As for the price, nothing in this world is free. You have to pay to support Kodi otherwise it will go away. And paying someone to make Kodi better I am all for.

Speaking in general, that’s not necessarily true, the issue is about maintainers.
Any program open/closed/free/commercial/etc. can have this issue.
Kodi can still die if no one is maintaining it/upstreaming MrMC’s modifications.
I have Kodi installed on my Fire TV and I’ve never paid for it. And until Fire OS 6.x, I don’t see it not working.
FYI: Just fixed display refresh rate detection. Now ‘Sync to Display’ actually works like it should. Look for it in v2.4.0.

if your CRT has an HDMI connector and the fireOS supports interlaced display output, yes. Otherwise, no.

Since there is no way to try it for free. Does it handle hevc 265 8 or 10 bit 1080p files? Does it pass through 7.1 dolby-true hd, dolby-atmos, dts-hd, dts:x? When do you expect version 2.4 to come out?

In the future, I’m willing to pay a monthly charge for Kodi and MrMc. These developers dedicate their time and effort in maintaining Kodi, out of their spare time. Kudos to Kodi, MrMC and these great developers!
The issue isn’t paying; its that the price is too high for an app. Even moreso, when it’s a stripped down version of something that exists for free.
Before you tear into me, I’m one of the few who’s paid for it. More as a way of saying thank you for their work in Kodi.

Can you guys please help me w. ftv 1? I put kodi on it via amazon back when and still have it. Then we had to use llahma or something to launch it or get it on home screen. I’ve installed all of those tricks that have been rolled out since this battle began. Now what do I do to get it functioning again? I don’t think I had sense enough to turn off auto upgrades, is this a big mistake too? I’m just looking for the simple way to revert ftv/kodi back to a usable state. If you haven’t noticed already, I’m a major meathead trying to teach himself how to do this. When I took my computer class, the mouse hadn’t been thought of yet! LOL I’m an analog man trying to catch up w/ you killers of the digital realm. You’ve taught me tons, can you help w/ this one too please? Thanks!
OH 1 more. I just found an unwrapped AFTV v1 and I need to load it up too. Is there a recent post that I could follow so I don’t make the same mistakes again? With all the tricks it’s taken to get this far, I don’t know where to begin w/ a fresh box. Do I kill updates NOW? I know you’ve more than likely provided this info somewhere, but I can’t find it.

Interesting. On the Google Play Store: Installs 100-500. Reviews 5. Plex installs 5m-10m. 112,000 reviews of which 99,000 are 4-5 star. So it seems common sense to opt for? Plex with a lower install cost across platforms (free on Apple TV, Fire TV, Shield TV and one price across all IOS devices), backed up with Kodi / SPMC for free OR MrMc? Hmmm, tough call – not!
