If you are seeing an “Error 40” or “QP1005” error message when you launch DirecTV Now, it’s probably because your device is rooted. Here is how to get around the message and use DirecTV Now on a rooted Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.

Big thanks to spotmark for first discovering this method.

  1. Sideload the app Hide My Root, which you can download here. The simplest way to do that is to install my Downloader app from the Amazon appstore and enter http://bit.ly/hidemyroot4 in the text field.

  2. Launch Hide My Root and select the “Hide su binary” option. Be sure to grant superuser access when you are asked. Note that you will need to select “Restore su binary” in the future when you need root access.

  3. You should now be able to use DirecTV Now. If you still get the error message, you may need to Force Stop, Clear data, and Clear cache for the DirecTV Now app. You can do so by going to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications on your Fire TV.

Don’t think that this is the case because my second generation Fire Tv has never been rooted. However, there is a note on the Directv Now site saying that the App does not support rooted/jailbroken devices.

Blast – went through 45 minute wait for chat, then another 1/2 hour to have them say they’ll look into it. Sound on commercials is fine- shows just scratchy noise

  13. I signed up for the 3 month trial to get the free ATV, but I am watching DTVn on Fire TV sticks. Works great. I cannot install the app on an UNrooted gen 1 fire tv. Amazon shows these as incompatible. Anyone running this on a gen 1 FTV with no tricks? Is this a me thing, an Amazon thing, or a DTVn thing?

  14. Robert Simandl says:

I sometimes get that QP1005 error message on my 1st-gen FTV on wi-fi, which is NOT rooted. Hitting refresh usually makes it go away and it works okay after that.

My 2nd-gen FTV on ethernet (also never rooted) doesn’t have this issue at all.

  15. DJ1 says:

I am unable to revert back ROOT on my Fire TV Gen 1 – It says failed to restore su binary. Make sure your SU app has been restored first..

Oh well so much for trying this out. So did i loose my root. How do i go back now ?

      same boat here

      • Some One says:

If you have an unlocked boot loader then your untouchable and can practically never lose root. If you have custom recovery menu and you can access it…then just reflash whichever custom rom you want. You won’t lose any saved data.
